• Turbocharge a 3.4

Have any of you guys ever retrofitted a turbocharger (or supercharger, for that matter) to a 3.4? chances are I am just dreaming. I am currently waiting for a K&N cai and shift kit. Future plans include probably a Flowmaster exh. Right now, I just want ot get rid of the high end flat spot (I think better breathing might be the solution). And then, maybe in the future, the dream is to give it some soup ergot he turbo question. A guy can dream, can't he?

I'm eventually gonna design a turbocharger setup, draw it up in CAD and offer schematics for download.

At the moment I'm limited by a lack of $$$ and the way my engine has been acting lately I think I'm going to rebuild before I start on that.

Hey TurboProject, wow that's really impressive, how much did the turbo cost ya? Cost aside, would it fit my '96 V6 3.8L firebird?

and what kinda numbers are u running now with the turbo at 7PSI? Your setup looks awesome b/c I am trying to add a S/C or turbo to my stock engine, and it seems majority of other mods require a rebuilding of the engine, which I simply can't do at this moment.

lostatlantis, I got the turbo used off ebay for $250, pretty much everything else is custom. I custom cut and welded up(actually a work buddy of mine did the welding) some pieces of ehaust tubing to drive the turbo. I upgraded the fuel and ignition as well. I haven't yet run at the track yet, I wanted to get everything else in line 1st, but soon I will. I don't know about fitting it on your 3.8. I've never snooped around the 3.8 engine compartment enough to see the room available but the 60 degree V on the 3.4 makes for a little more room than I would think the 90 degree 3.8 would have. I also have another 3.4 engine in the garage that I'm slowly working through making everything turbo spacific.

How much boost are you running?

I think I figured with 6psi the 3.4L would produce around 225HP and with 8psi it would produce around 240HP.

I would guess you are making at least 235HP.

Thats assuming no other mods than what is required for the turbo. You could easily make much more with other mods since the increase from boost acts as a percentage.

Yea, I currently don't have any internal engine mods. I upgraded the fuel system w/ 24# injectors and a rising rate fule pressure regulator(also know as a FMU-fuel management unit). And I have the DIS-4 for an ingnition upgrade, and the intake you can see in that picture are the main mods I've done so far to the engine itself. I would definatly benifit from openeing up the heads and intake manifold, but that's what that 2nd engine is for...

You're doing right now what I plan on doing.

I wanna get a second 3.4L and rebuild for boost. Get some head work done, slightly lower CR forged pistons, better piston rings, and custom copper gaskets all the way around. Plus a lot of other stuff that I have to design myself like custom exhaust headers.

I wanna be able to run at least 12psi consistently and then maybe add a small shot of nitrous to cool intake charge and bump the boost up to 16 or 18psi for the strip.
