  • 4L60E, how much can it handle

I looked around and never found any info on how much this tranny can take in stock form. i know there is a kit from KDS, but i dont know their site. basically when i add my turbo how much hp can i push out of it before my tranny needs to be built.

It can handle about 350 ft/lbs of torque. You need to look at your complete drivetrain and consider how much torque it can handle, not hp numbers. Don't forget to consider the rear end.

a higher stall converter will kill your transmission faster too. And not changing the fluid, and neutral bomb drops.

Transgo Shift kit will help somewhat to save the life of your transmission.

Common misconception right there. Shift kits have not been proven to help or hurt them. They will absolutely destroy your tranny if it is already having problems though.

The KDS "Hoss" kit is rated at 400-450 lbft of torque, I would suggest getting a heavy duty reverse reaction shell and bearing, as well as a hardened input shaft and housing if you are going above that with a 4l60e

                  http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4L60E.htm

You will have to ask what they can and can't do.

The site is pointed mainly to V8's
                  F-Body's and Y-Bodys.

But you can give it a try.

                    http://www.pro-built.net

                    Traction kills transmissions.

Doing burnouts (no load on the transmission causes internal part failure)

The shift kit thing is debateable....some of them increase fluid transfer among other things.

Burnouts shouldnt kill a transmission unless you are having a failure already in your transmission, look at what a car does on a dyno. And cars seem to last all day on dynos, not much load there.

even brake launching wont cause problems unless your transmission is already on thin ice. People do some crazy brake launches at the track with corvettes and f-bodys.

Just about every problem iv seen dew to transmissions are the follow

                            Too much power
                            Towing too much wieght

But most of the problems i see are from people mistreating their transmissions by slamming the shifter into reverse then drive too quickly, neutral dropping into gear, not changing fluid.

Auto is not manual dont treat it like it is.

Torque converter can cause a lot of excess heat on the tranny as well. I shredded my PI VIG 3500 converter and my tranny on the way to AIS last year.

Tranny rebuild with Hi-Energy components(kevlar/carbon fiber)
back on the stock converter right now with no Problems

I have run a tranny cooler since I installed the first converter.

tranny problems have to do with the way your car is setup and how you treat it everyone will get different results.

I believe with my rebuild and hi-energy components mine can handle in excess of 350-400HP to the wheels w/ major traction as in 1.7 or lower 60'. This is going to be spraying a 120 dry shot on a 2800 Yank converter and I'm not the slightest bit worried about my tranny.
