Lots of chat on this message board about turbos, but no one has the solution to installing one without the sacrifice of A/C. Unless I'm missing something, our engine compartments, especially 3.8L do not lend themselves to turbo exhaust plumbing. I've spent too much time trying to figure it out and I have no reasonable solution.

Well I have been kinda thrust into a situation where I will probably get the opportunity to put a turbo on. I was recommended the T-04. I think that may be what I use, not sure yet. I don't know a whole lot about turbos, so I am looking for advice. I want to run just enough boost (at first) so I won't need an FMU or MSD ignition. Until I get that situated with no issues. I will remove the damn ac if I need to. (I can live with the AZ Summers with no AC). I believe I will need an external wastegate (I guess I will run arond 6 psi at first, until I make sure its going to work well). Then up to 9 and maybe 12 (With the FMU, injectors, etc). I plan on finding out how much the 3.8 can handle. I have a hunch it can handle a lot, but the motor HATES to be run lean, so I will do a lot of testing at each boost level first. They guy who wants to help me turbo the car has turbo'd about 10 cars now, and his good friend owns an exhaust shop, so the plumbing shouldn't be a problem, I will think of SOMETHING, I am crafty... hehe... The intitial buy-in on this looks to be about 500-600 dollars for the turbo and wastegate (used), plus whatever the exhaust shop chrages. I also want to run an intercooler, but I really don't know how to fit that thing.... I may buy a turbo and cooler and then play around with them for a long time to see how it would fit without blocking the radiator.
I have a few questions first:

Do I need to actually mount the turbo somewhere? Or let the exhaust piping hold it in place? Something I always forget to look at when I check out someones setup...

Whats a good wastegate? I was eying the Turbonetics Deltagate II... Not sure yet here either...

I need to get a solid decision soon on what parts, so far I am 80% on the stuff I mentioned, once I buy in, they kit WILL GO ON. I can't let something sit in my garage... just cant...
Any advice is welcomed.

removing the AC will free up so much overall room in the compartment. you'll be able to mount a intercooler in place of the ac condenser and run piping above and into the tb. i'd suggest a turbo setup like on the nissan 300Z twin turbo's. The intercooler would have to use 2 inlets, 1 on each side, and 1 outlet out the top by where the stock air box would be. the piping for this would be a lot simpler than running just 1 turbo and having a bunch more piping for it. air filters would have 2 be conical and 1 on each turbo. With the intercooler, you have a camaro, and u have the 2 air ducts that are right behind the grill. if you can get rid of the windshield washer resevoir and system, as well as all the plastic crap, you should have a free path for air to hit the intercooler and the radiator.

If you do small jumps in injector size, you'll be able to train the engine to accept a lot larger injectors than stock. this wouldn't require a FMU if u ran large enough injectors.

I'd do the ignition anyways since it'll just get you more power cuz of being able to light off the entire air/fuel mixture, especially on a boosted car, even at low boost like 6 psi. u should get colder plugs too. GTP guys get colder plugs when they up boost, and so it might be a good idea for u 2 do it too.

He just made some Turbo Eclipse headers... hmmmm...
I am not doing a twin setup. Don't want to...
Doing a GN type... Running the exhaust pipe from the y pipe up to the front of the engine, through the turbo and back out. Where will the pipes go? Dunno yet.
Turbo intake from the stock location and then through an intercooler, probably mounted under the throttle body, and then into the throttle body. I want to get a taller intercooler, rather than a long one. We'll see how it shapes up.

I will probably convert my nitrous system into a intercooler freezer also. I already have colder plugs and a bigger fuel pump too, from using nitrous.

Im finishing work on a 3.8L turbo that maintains A/C!!! and it will push 9 psi daily driven, maybe some 12 psi track passes and dyno soon....

Tiago, how are you taking care of timing issues to run 9 PSI safely? Are you just running stock ignition? Are just just running it very rich? Maybe I will get my car out before you

Tiago, please tell me how you route your plumbing. I spent too much time trying to figure out a reasonable and safe way to do it. Pics would be great too. I'm really curious.

i hope that works out.. i'd rather have a turbo then a charger.

turbo is a type of charger..

but i also would rather have turbo over a supercharger

for thos with ram air hoods, couldnt u just place the intercooler where the air comes through? or are the intercoolers too big?

cause u can always re route the intake. since it will now go in through the turbo..

just my thought
