  • Turbo Sizing

Hey all, couple of questions on turbo sizing on a 98 3.8L.

If I run some #'s from Corky Bell's book, I get (at roughly peak power ~5200 where it will push the most air):

    .5*.8*231*5200/1728 =278 cfm.

I was thinking most people here who run about 10 psi get about 350 rwhp. So at about 10 psi that's (14.7+10)/14.7=1.68 Pressure Ratio

So now the motor flows 278*1.68=467 cfm @ 1.68 PR

    If I take 1 lb/min=14.472 cfm I get ~32.3 lb/min

Are my numbers completely off? By these numbers & looking at their flowmaps(http://www.turbofast.com.au/flowmaps.html), (just a few for an example) I see say a T72 as being way-off in size. A T61 is barely small enough. Most of the T3 series is too small unless you'd be dividing the lb/min by half for a twin setup, but I'm assuming a solo setup. So what's a good Garrett setup to run? Or is there a better company/turbo?

PTE67 would be a good turbo.

T3 is too small for the single setup, but T3/T4 is just right for stock engine.
T3 with Turbonetics T60-1 is very nice; The ideal is T62-1, if you plan to do the engine in the future. Its been proved that even T70 could perform very good, but remember , all those people with T70 did hardcore modification to their engines.
      Good Luck!

Not true, I have not touched heads or cam, only thing on the engine that I have upgraded are the injectors. Other than that it's a stock engine, for now...
