  • U Guys Recommend Porting & Polishing the Throttle Body w/ the Powerdyne??

Hey all, while i sit here and wait for my blower to come back from powerdyne, i'm going to go next week to my mechanic to get some work done (Rear Disc swap, 3.42 gears, Spec 3 Clutch etc.) .. Now i was reading up on the "How To Port and Polish The Throttle Body On Your 1996-1998 3.8 Series II"... and it got me thinking to get my mechanic to do this for me.
Now, under a blown setup, i'm planning to somehow solve my slippage problem in the near future and have a constant 7-8 lbs of boost, i may even upgrade to a 9 lb pulley (and fuel pump), but we'll see, how well the slippage problem can be fixed. Besides cutting off the center bar in the throttle body, how much should i get him to take off around the edges of the throttle body? I've heard that i can't take it down too much or else i might throw the SES and it'll run like garbage. So what is the optimal amount i can get my mechanic to shave off, in order to see some good gains? Cause if non-blown/turboed 6's are seeing an approximate 10 hp gain from this mod, i would think that us blown people would see close to double that?

what do u guys think, any precautions should think about?

    thanks

So no one here has experimented with porting and polishing their throttle body with forced induction?? i may be the first one then....
    hmmm... interesting.

There's more about this in advanced tech.

If you take out the whole bar, you will probably have to upgrade to a '99 maf sensor. Which includes a plastic portion around the sensor that is nearly the same obstruction of the top half of your existing bar. Net effect will about the same as taking out only the lower half.

I went that route, and then recently put an LT1 Impala maf sensor (same basic design as the v8 fbody sensor). Which eliminated the bar entirely from the tb. I then ported the maf sensor (it had a big fin right in the middle) and it threw the calibration way off. Now I'm going to try an LT1 fbody sensor and see how that works.

As far as hogging out the inside of the tb further, the most restrictive part is from the butterly on back to the intake. If you get that opened up, you'll need a bigger butterly plate to match. zzperformance does this on some GTP upgrades they offer.

I ported my TB with the powerdyne.

If you start messing with that post and removing pieces you are going to throw off the calibration of the maf sensor and it will really effect how the car runs. IE - bad idle, with the cam I couldn't run the AC in stop/go trafic without it stalling. Without a way to custom program and correct the maf values I would not suggest it.

However if you want to completely remove the entire MAF post and install a 99 maf sensor that is the only way to do it. You will need to drill out the top of the TB on a drill press and also do some cutting to make it seal correctly. I did mine at a machine shop on the drill press.

There is more info on this in the advanced tech forum.

hmm.... i'm not sure this is something i want to really be messing with just for like 10 hp.... i do not want to start swapping maf sensors and stuff like that... especially if removing the top half of the bar affected your car's performance too...

good thing u guys told me..

          thanks

so, if i want to avoid these problems, should i not even polish the sucker for smoother flow, or will that not even be worth it.... i would totally like to experiment with the TB, however my car hasn't run normal in like a year, i've always had a problem with the blower or something like that... so i kinda wanna keep my feet out of the water for a bit.... i was going to my mechanic to get some stuff done, so i thought this mod would be easy for him to do and to get me soem easy HP, but i might leave it alone for a little bit.

            thanks again

In reality, unless you are really looking for every ounce of Hp potential a P&P TB will do you no good...remember you are already forcing in air into the engine...you will need to be blowing in more than 40lb/min to even max the tb out...you get better gains by getting a grinder and doing some lil porting on your xhaust ports...
