• METHANOL/ ALCOHOL INJECTION

Anybody considered running methanol/ alcohol injection into their setup? I set up a kit after
deciding this would be cheaper than running an intercooler. You can make a reliable unit for
about $150.00 dollars. Heard about several Buick
GN cars running an extra 5-6 lbs of boost with
no knock retard and adding extra octane with sequential methanol. Denatured alcohol works pretty well also. This is good for both NA and
forced injection vehicles.

imho intercooling is the best way to go and is worth the extra money. play it safe and intercool.

I've thought about methanol/liquid co2. Methanol is good b/c it has added octane and has the same cooling affects like liquid co2. you can run both intercooler and methanol together. i think methanol would be a better choice over nitrous.

the only down side is you need to be on a dyno to tune it right there. and it takes alot of tuning

I want to use this system, and I was not aware of any tuning issues other than the RPM activated window switch (Summit Racing has one cheap at $50.00 bucks) for NA cars and the boost pressure
switch used for FI cars. The basic DIY kit has
you get the proper parts. What other tuning issues would I have if I already have an adjustable timing and fuel CPU?

I've tried this almost 5 years ago when I was running 7psi and it worked pretty well. Actually I think, I was the first one from here. I was using distilled water and mixing it with alcohol.

I broke the nozzle and pump wasn't working anymore. It was a cheap thing anyway.

But if your going for it, go for the best:

I forget their websites but do a search engine on it. They've improved so much and I plan on doing this again next year.

Methanol is a great add-on for everybody considering a rear-mount kit too...it's fairly inexpensive, has a very high octane rating to prevent detonation, has the cooling effects of nitrous or CO2...

If and when I go turbo I will likely run a methanol kit.

not only does it cool the intake charge, it has hydrocarbons in it, meaning it's fuel. this is also what helps allow more boost to be used.

Im with ya on that. Get a good kit like this one
http://www.alkycontrol.com

If you make a home kit it can fail and if you tune with it and it fails then boom. This kit is a progressive kit. It gives more alky when more boost is present. I am going to get this same kit for the camaro. I will be running a FMIC and ALKY. Would you like 1 girl in bed or 2? Thats how I look at it!

Sounds and looks great. I guess that I can go this route or buy a progressive controller. I am
not too worried about failure considering I am only going to run a max of 6lbs of boost. But reliability will be a concern if I go up to 9 or 10lbs. Thank everyone for the input.

FMIC AND methanol injection is definately the way to go. Cheap blue winshield washer fuid is a good source for a 50/50 water/methanol mix to feed to the injection.

Alkycontrol looks like at GREAT system. But a reliable $150 system that comes on at say 5 psi and can be tuned to deliver just enough fluid to keep KR down is way better than nothing. Let's say fluid injection is at 30% of fuel flow at 5 psi (say 270 hp) at 400 hp you would still have fluid injection at 20% of fuel flow. As far as tunning, if you were at 12.5:1 before injecting 50% methanol (and methanol has 50 % of the BTU of gasoline) 30% injection should make you 11.5:1

PS The winshield washer bottle that came in the Sabb 9000 is a good size with a low fluid indicator

Thanks RGB. You know alot about tuning. I am trying to locate some methanol
pretty cheap here in Memphis,TN. There are alot of chemical companies here, but I have seen some
places online that sell it in bulk.

I'd try windshield washer fluid. I've used it before and it works well. It holds the benefits of alcohol and it's increased octane, but isnt quite as flammable as straight alcohol.

You can buy methanol in 55 gal drums. Check paint suppliers or places that sell fuel to racers (like a Turbo Blue supplier). However, I see no need for buying the straight methanol for injection, use the cheap blue windshield washer fluid. The mix is better for injection than either 100% water or 100% methanol. I don't think you will save any money mixing your own (and likely will plug your nozzel).

I have used 10% methanol (from a 55 gal drum of straight methanol) in the gas tank in the past but why waste this octane booster by using it all the time when you can set it up to inject only when you need it.

p.s. I don't know alot about tuning but I'm good at math .
