• how much boost is streetable?

1.) Im thinking of building an engine to run high boost(turbo), but I was really wondering is 20psi streetable? How much HP do you think that would realisticly(sp?) produce at the wheels
2.) What does a 3.8 need to run high boost?
Thanks
Shane

you can match boost levels too what the motor has for compression ratio and fuel adding. you can run any ammount of boost you want from a turbo on the street, just needs too be able too take it everyday. 20psi is common for street cars, but if the turbo is properly sized you wont need anything more then that! Im sorry if I sound stupid but I am extremely new to this forced induction stuff, I heard a nissan's BOV and I loved it, got hooked and started thinking about the whole idea. What does a 3.8 require to run 20psi and what do you think that would put out for HP&TQ?
Thanks Shane

for 20 psi, you would need maft+ for sure, probably bigger injectors ( lean it out a little with the maft and rich it up way up top ). Forged internals and your prolly going to want to lower compression to 9.0 ( average max streetable on 93 pump gas is 25 psi WELL TUNED with out knock ).

Forged rods

Fmu, uhhh a logger for fine tuning, the cam isn't designed for a turbo so you may wanna change that to about what a GN uses, something that will let air in and Really let it out with out alot of overlap.

Walbro 255 fuel pump

and FYI you cant hear a stock bov so he probably had upgraded to a HKS SSQ or other after market bov.

your going to need a deep pocket for when the 20 psi hits. your probably also going to want to rescurculate the air, it makes the car run better because it has ready air available and doesn't have to suck in a fresh new batch and also keeps the rich state down between shifts.

Oh yea some good spark plugs. NGKbpr7es are what I use in my DSM.

well thats the out line off stuff you want prolly gonna want a good head gasket set also =D

Oh yea almost forgot Intercooler =D

Tuned correctly I would guess 450 hp peak crank, probably lower.

Yeah I dont think the BOV was stock but it sounded so sweet. Ive never been in a boosted car so I really dont know much about them or how they feel, so i really appreciate you guys taking the time to put it into lamens terms for me. I really started giving it some more thought when my friend with an SRT-4 dynoed around stock LS1 numbers running 17-20psi of boost yesterday. I figure I should be able to run 20 psi with some work and put out some nice numbers. ;)

Lord_Gufi, I tried searching but couldnt find anything. What do you mean recirculate the air? How do you do that? Is that how you keep it from blowing out a big A$$ cloud of unburnt fossil fuel?
Matt, I also wanted to state that I think this should really stay in the forum for people to use the information that gets posted.
Thanks

Forged internals. 8.0 to 1 dishtop pistons. A turbo cam. 42 lb per hr injectors. High performance rollers, a double roller timing chain. You will need to have the internals balanced, the balance shaft taken out and the hole plugged. An extra inlet hole drilled under the manifold. A competition hone job on the block. Oil journals drilled out slightly for more oil intake into the engine. High performance metal gaskets. P&P'd heads, and upper and lower intakes. All new bearings, bolts, head bolts.. (suggestion clevite bearings and ARP bolts). A turbo capable of producing 20lbs of boost on 91-93 octane gas. A good intercooler. You will need your crank shot peened, polished and hardened. Headers, one being a turbo header, which would come with the turbo kit. A high quality turbo kit with all necessary parts. This is just some of the basics. This type of set up is capable of producing over 500 hp at the wheels with 20lbs of boost.

Wow I think 500Hp is to much for me, I think Id like it somewhere around 400. Is the new 3.8 turbo kit capable of high boost?

WHY would you go wtih 8.0 compression???!! gezus thats ****ing low! my car has NO power at the 7.8 that its at till I hit boost, do NOT go with any thing lower than 8.5

all of the stuff he said, Yes thats all going to get you a NON streetable car, 500 hp from the v6 will not be streetable unless you keep out of the boost, youll just spin when the boost kicks in unless your on slicks.

well... unless your like me and you have awd =Þ

that isnt true at all. i have 8-1cr in my turbo 3.4 and it is rediculously fast before boost. 8.5 is safe, but not as safe as 8-1. n/a power is not what should be worried about in a car that isnt n/a. it has a turbo too make power and it is there when you need it. thats all! all you need for more boost is a properly designed setup that is not gonna blow u pthe first time you get under load. and boost has no correlation too hp unless you specify what turbo/ how many cubic inches the motor is. noone in here could even run 10psi with my turbo because the AIRFLOW is a ton more then a standard t4. you could run 20psi out of a tiny turbo or 5psi out of a huge turbo and it will do the same (figuratively speaking) boost is jstu liek a reference measurement too keep the engine in its safety zone for that turbo specifically.
