  • Going forged, maybe stroked?

Due to a recent lack of respect for the L36's stock bottom end...... I just bought a freshly honed 95 block today, which I will be building this winter and dropping next summer. NOW what to do with it is the question....

Forged pistons and rods yes.....but what about ZZP's stroker kit, now I know the crank "snapped" under 14 psi, but common, a crank snapping????? that sounds a bit rare, plus they have said there have been some improvements made to the kit since then, I am planning on running upwards of 17 psi on this kit, so that just may not work.

EDIT: just read the stroker kit actually raises compression by .8, that is not the direction I am looking to go.

Second Idea, keep it simple, bore the block .020 over, forged pistons and rods.

all new bearings, main studs, connecting rod bolts, piston rings, etc. and I will be transporting all the top end over from my existing block.

The turbo may or may not make it on the car this year, I havent decided yet. Meth injection will be here on wed. along with an additional bottle of nitro methane additive which i plan on running at the track this coming Sunday. so yea chime in, tell me what you think.

    **EDIT x2** 8.5:1 or 8.0:1??

95 block? dont know if thats a good call
I wouldnt get THAT stroker kit if you plan on turboing
maybe if you were running a real cheap supercharger under low boost

If you get ARP main studs you will have to get it resized I'm pretty sure
(small price to pay for peace of mind)
If you get ARP rod bolts, you will definately have to get the caps resized
but dam it to hell, dont get ANYTHING mixed up like I did (rod caps)

wait wait, why dont you like the 95 block?

and as far as resizing, a good engine shop would handle that I assume?

          Re: Going forged, maybe stroked?

as far as ive heard on the zzp kit, its not really intended for anything more than n/a. some have gotten away with low boost. but i dunno if id spend that kind of money on something that isnt a bit more proven.

the only other stroker kit out there is the aussie kit. COME racings kit appears to be nice, but its damn expensive and well lol its down under so it would take for ever to get here and shipping would probably be insane.

I know, I checked it out already wayyyyyy to expensive, I just dont understand tho with the ZZP kit, they only lighten the crank by 2 pounds! Oh well, Myabe just bore it out and go forged?

ZZP's reply to "can the stroker kit handle 15 psi on a turbo kit?"

              ......"not a chance."

lol - I knew that would be there response
yes a machine shop can handle that resizing stuff for cheap

The 95 block has the angled throttle body, probably doesnt matter to you though
You're right there is nothing wrong with a 95 block as long as its:
                a 3.8 and not a 3.4
                not rusted
actually low mileage (I'm talking at least less than 50k)

it doesn't matter that it is a 95 block. Also the block has nothing to do with the angled throttle body. That is your top end with your intake and all. The blocks are all the same from 95-02.

                    Re: Going forged, maybe stroked?

How much bore can the 3800 safely handle???... I didn't see it mentioned in the stickies. I've seen .020 mentioned here and there... that doesn't seem like a great deal.

My '02 is currently in the shop, undergoing a Powerdyne install, but I've been toying with the idea for additional displacement down the road. :naughty:

i think .020 is all you can go. anything after that and you'll run into major problems.

                        you're right
just make sure that 95 isnt a 3.4

you can go 30 over, but good luck finding pistons,

its a 3.8 no 3.4 here, and it comes freshly honed as well, but now that I am going to have it bored, oh well I guess.

Off-hand, do you know if you can go over .020 if the block is sleeved? Or, by problems are we talking interference with the water jackets?

So much for the dream of taking her up to 302 cu.i.

yeah you wont be getting 302 ci out of it lol

youre pretty much dead on about the water jackets as far as i know.
