I know that the base turbo kits for the Grand Prix guys are non-intercooled. Has anyone run a non-intercooled turbo set up on one of our cars? It would be cheaper initially, and then you could add the intercooler later when you wanted to.

Re: Non intercooled turbo kit?
why would you wanna do that though...
i dont know about the kits you are talking about but from what can think of the only reason somebody wouldent want one is 1-less weight or 2-not enough money
but the weight issue is just stupid...thats like saying you only need 3 pistons.. less weight=f45t3r!111
and if you are turboing your car.. one of the things you should buy first is an intercooler... so everyone can see it and because it helps so much
cooler air=t3h s3x
but i dont know... lol

Re: Non intercooled turbo kit?
Here's Cartuning's answer: Doesn't a turbo kit NEED an intercooler? Is it safe to run all that hot air without one?
Here is a very interesting question. If you have a kit which comes with say, a fuel pressure riser and no pcm tuning whatsoever, I'd say the kit was unsafe for the engine with OR without an intercooler. However if the kit was designed properly, and the pcm was tuned for all the changes made, it's perfectly safe. A turbo outputs air much cooler then the stock eaton supercharger does from GM. I don't recall the factory giving you an intercooler! We've tuned the car to 91 octane, and have allowed for 15 degrees of WOT timing, along with many other fueling, trans, etc changes and see absolutely 0 degrees of knock retard. This kit is perfectly safe to use without an intercooler. The addition of the IC will allow you run more boost, timing, or a combination of the two resulting in more horsepower.

1. Stop giving us descriptions of how much boost you want to run and give us numbers.
2. The intercooler will only HELP you produce more power and be safer.
3. It will be cheaper to do the intercooler while your having the turbo kit fabbed and installed then it will afterwards.
4. Make sure you don't pay attention to everything a company puts on their website. Usually its partially right and then only in a general sense. Just because they make a kit and they are on the interweb doesn't mean they know what their talking about (See: RK Sport Powerdyne kit for example).
5. In the end its up to you. Regardless of what we say. There are tons of unintercooled kits running around. The intercooler is not necessary in most of the applications. If your going for performance then get the intercooler. If you want to be like the factory and suggest performance but really go for whats cost effective. Don't get the intercooler and try to throw in some restrictive exhaust somewhere. (Btw, that "well the factory doesn't have intercoolers" arguement is just hilarious. Most people who mod their cars have a nice list of things they can't believe the factory did to their cars)
Good luck. Have fun. The intercooler won't hurt you it will only benefit you.00\' firebird v6 5spd<br />201rwhp ---- 230 rwtq<br />\"Everyday I grow stronger...and further from you.\"<br />WARNING: Do not take any of my comments seriously unless they are technical in nature and then only at your own risk

IC is not needed but you will make more power with one, and its a lot safer on the motorwww.turbov6camaro.com

Re: Non intercooled turbo kit?
Instead of using an IC how about going chemical, like meth injection. That cools the aircharge as well. But would it be cheaper than an intercooler? Now Playing: \'99 Pewter Firebird, stock, bone stock, and nothing but stock, so help me God!<br />Comming attractions: K&N Filter, Lid Mod, Intake Bellows Smooth Pipe Mod.<br />I dream about: Forced Induction (TC or SC) or NOX (or both!)
