  • To spool or not to spool...

So me and my father are looking into putting a FFF turbo kit into my 2001 Convertible Firebird. The secret problem im having with all of this it the cost. I love my car (minus the engine) to death. We've already installed a WS6 R/A Hood and Magnaflow Cat-Back Exhaust, but if we have the turbo installed the over all cost spent on the car will be right around $20,000. So im sitting here thinking why the hell spend all this money when I can get the same performance if I sell my car and get a T/A or Formula. Will someone please ease my pains and give a fellow bird owner some advice!?

i say do it. would you rather have a 12-13 second v6 and be different? or have a 12-13 second ls1 like everyone else.

How are you spending $20k??!! Where did you come up with that number?

To answer your question though, its all personal preference. For most people they cant afford the insurance of a Z or T/A, gas is better in a v6 even with a turbo, some people just like to do a different sort of project. With the money I have into my v6 I could have bought a stock LS1 or LT1, but its more impressive to have a fast v6 than an average v8, its even more impressive if you are faster than a v8. ;) I like the idea of a sleeper.

if you get this turbo you will ba at T/A level perform, but then comes tuning and all other good S*** associated with a turbo.

You will need HP tuners for one.

an FMU or larger fuel injectors

        New fuel pump

        wastegate

        BOV

i mean the list outside of the turbo kit is pretty big.

I loved building up the parts and everything for this turbo setup I am doing. But I would dropped it in a second if I woulda realized i would have had enough to really invest in a Ls1 and aftermarket.

        Turbo = many head aches.

Yea $20K was a real rough guestimate. More like this actually: $10K for the car, $3K or so for the new hood and paint, $750 Magnaflow Cat-Back (thats with Midas labor price added in), and now around $6k ish for fuel pump, injectors, kit, labor, and A-pillar gauges= $19,750 Roughly.

I did some talking with my dad and we've decided to just go through with the turbo. I like the idea of kicking some V8 *** with a six shooter. I'll keep you guys updated on the project. Thanks to you guys that left some feedback, I appreciate it.

It sounds like your parents are supporting your car, so I would try and get a V8. My camaro with exhaust and intake gets horrible gas mileage, almost as bad as my dads 350 van. I don't know why but it does, but it does. Also, spending that much money on a car you could probably resell for half you put into it is a waste. Of course, you could demod it if you sell (probably a real pain in the a$$). I feel the same you do, I love the car but hate the motor. I figure why put so much money into something when you can buy a V8 and mod it for the same amount. I know a lot of people disagree, but a modded LS1>modded V6. So just wait to get a V8 and just enjoy your car the way it is. Don't make it into something it wasn't meant to be. Just my .02.

Bad news, we did some more looking into all of the work and cost spent on the car and it doesn't look likely that we will be doing the turbo. I am looking into the Trans Am/Formula LT1 Procharger P600B kit to see what modifications to the original kit would have to be done for it too work off of my car but even that is real iffy at this point. Theres just no point to spending $6K on a performance upgrade that we will never see back out of it when we go to sell it down the road. We were at one point looking into a Formula real close by (1999 with 80K miles on the clock for $8,500) that had magnaflow exhaust on it already and the same interior and exterior colors that my current bird does. The problem being is the fact that we arent sure what the dealership would give us in trade and if the WS6 Freshly painted hood would match up with the existing paint (we were planning on putting the stock hood back on and keeping the WS6 stuff for the other car).

So now comes the question of what do I really wanna do with my car now? Well while I am waiting for more info on the procharger stuff, i've already started figuring in what additional mods I can do. A set of headers, 3:42 gears and a 2700 torque converter, and possibly a wet nitrous kit. Is it all worth it? Ultimately I wanna get ls1 performance, its just a question of how.

umm you have to do the same upgrade with a SC kit as you do with a turbo...... not really seeing where your going here....

Dont waste your time with a 2700, I wouldnt go any lower than 3200 if I were you. 3.42's are a good happy medium gear set too

If you are looking for LS1 performance, then you will be beating on LS1s with the mods you mentioned man.

                          3500+ stall
                          gears
                          headers
                          exhaust
100 wet shot (or about >7psi boost, correct me if I'm wrong Viper)

With some minor rear suspension and mild tuning, thats easily a mid 13 second car.
