  • boost question?

Has anyone here actually blew out their bottom end from too much boost? I was thinking on turing my boost up a little since I think mine would be ok with my intercooler. I was talking to zz p performance for cams because I was looking into rebuilding my engine and other things. he told me our stock bottom ends could take 20 psi as long as there is no detonation, but I though our engines were different from the supercharged 3.8s (rods and pistons). Does anyone know how this is true?

definetly, if tuned correctly stock bottom ends can handle 20 psi

      Re: boost question?

zzp is correct, they were running the l36 bottom end in their shop car last year on 20+ psi. All in the tune

The l67 block is slightly different when it comes to rods/pistons/compression but overall same engine

the l67 will handle over 30 tuned out and I/C right

        and the L32 even more.

holy crap. I never knew.....Im going to change the boost in mine then. I would assume my engine and procharger would wear out a lot quicker?

well the more psi, the more wear on the motor

you can have more then 10psi for a daily driver, as long as the tune is good. You can run 15psi daily, and 20 for the track if you want too, as long as you dont go lean and theres no detonation like stated above but if you have a higher milage motor i dont reccomend it. At 15psi you will start to get valve float if you have alot of miles, if it has low milage, valve float shouldnt be a problem for a while. You could always just upgrade the valve springs tho and never hafto worry about it...i have been running 10psi on my car for almost a year now, and soon i will be on 15psi when i get bigger injectors. These motors are strong, and will lat for a very long time on a good amount of boost as long as the tune is good.

I could see 12-15psi on a DD 3800II with the stock bottom end. It is pretty stout.

I daily drove mine on 15 psi, 50 miles a day for 3-4 months. I can daily drive it on 22 if I want to, but I only actually do drive it daily for a week at a time about once a month. My stock 122,xxx mile engine is still going strong and has been under boost since 115k, all very very hard miles (poor car :) ).

Got any info on your setup? Or an fquick, cardomain, or just a website with some pics of it? Kinda interested to see what you have come up with.

Do you want to see this in your oil pan, do you??

Just kidding, but one wrong move and you will be looking for a new engine
Or rebuilding one, like me. Unintentionally run lean once on my VR4, that was enough..

Most of my info is on my fquick
                              www.fquick.com/1SICK6

Yes stock MAF, but it maxes at about 9 -10 psi, and lots of tuning to get it perfect. but now I really don't have to mess with it too much. only when I switch to and from race gas I switch files.
