    Re: Forward swept header build

I have welded galvanized before and was just careful of the fumes. The galvanized I'm talking about is standard exhaust tubing. I got some from a freind's repair shop to do my turbo pipes and used the stretch type exhaust bender he has to make my bends, then used a tailpipe expander to make them round if I needed a partial bend. Here are some pics of my work...

And now am modifying it for the buyer...

The mods are being done to use his headers, they are 304L and I am able to MIG them, but 304 is not ideal, as you know.

      Re: Forward swept header build

Forced_Firebird, looks like good work! These things can be a pain to put together!!

Speaking of pain, I got the majority of the y-pipe put together tonight. I'm still waiting on the flange for the turbocharger which is supposed to be here tomorrow and I'll finish it up using a t61 I have for mock up. Anyway, here is the tacked up ypipe waiting to be welded up! the drivers side looks kind of close to the throttle body in this pic but there is actually quite a bit of room there.

        That looks FANTASTIC!

Thanks, and after seeing so many people doing forward headers, well I just can't wait. I know it will be a pain at some points, but that's what it's all about. When I went to install my drain line, I realized the turbo was too low and had to raise the pipes 3" :P.

Did you check you that site? I fixed the name for you in post #16, their order page still works.

check out intense's race car, they're making over 700 hp with 1 5/8" headers, 2 1/8" collectors. 1 3/4" headers are great for n/a and s/c cars, but imo you'll lose a ton of response and power.

and yes, ss likes to distort. it is a tiny bit less dense than mild steel (.283 vs .286 lb/cu.in). 304/316 are ok for headers, and you really want 321 for turbos. the nickel tax has gone crazy lately. even a couple of years ago the cost of buying ss tube and having it mandrel bent was more than just buying a completed header. if you ceramic coat them (which you want anyway) you might as well stay with mild steel.

forced_firebird - thanks for the link! i didn't know how i'd afford headers for my turbo project. i really don't like what zzp/ct/et. al are doing.

Thanks! Headers are a pain to build but when done right, it's a good feeling! Post some pics up as you go!

I did see the site. Got some good stuff there. I like the little adapters they make for the flanges. Those are fun to make by hand!

I'm not sure if you mean to say this setup would make more power with 1 5/8s primaries. If so, I respectfully disagree.

Not as fun as writing a CNC program ;). I will have a running CNC shop by the end of next week (if everything goes as planned). Actually it's one of my best friends' shop and I have full access, all I got to do is run some production parts for him while there.

Impressive. I like the way those are done, and if you might be interested in teh future (whenever I get out of large sums of debt), I wouldn't mind if you could set me up with a set.

Thanks. I can understand the large sums of debt for sure! If you want some help putting a kit like this one together, just lmk!

I put the finishing touches on the setup tonight. I used a t3 flanged t61 I had for mockup. That should bring this portion of the build to a close. I'm sure redcamaro1996 will pick it up from here and put together one kickass setup!

                    Re: Forward swept header build

Is he planning on intercooling it? Looks good, I wish I had that much room to get around from the driver's side in a 3rd gen. With the new motor (3.4/3500 hybrid), I will move the accessories where they are convenient for me, lol.

I'm not sure what his exact plans are but I believe he is going to run a front mount setup of some kind. I know your pain well on the room! There isn't anything even remotely resembling room around an ls1 in a 4th gen! This car is getting a built/boosted 408. I'm buying stock in Budwieser and Tylonal for that header build...

Boosted 408 should be a lot of fun. I would like to see it when finished.

Yeah, I think all the FFH kits tiago has made have required those to be moved so Shane's old kit is still the only one I know of that didn't.
