  • Members New Turbo Headers done.

I've got a fellow members Camaro here and just finished the forward facing headers and merge pipe. I had them HPC Coated and they are ready for final install.
His exhaust turbine wheel was destroyed by the last people who fabricated the turbo setup. They left debris in the pipes and it wound up in the exhaust housing chewing up the turbine wheel beyond repair. Turbonetics quit making replacement parts for the small shaft turbos.

He's getting me a replaement turbo so I can finish the downpipe and IC pipes.

I'll put a base tune on it like I did the other Camaro I did just before winter.

Anyhow.. this is how the headers look.

never seen it mocked up on the pass side like that. No A/C?

or are the upside down in that pic?

what year F-body do those go too?? What factory header did you use for the driver side??

also, wheres the wastegate flange?? Or is it gonna be internal...

How much that cost to make? I'd be interested in something like that.

This set is sitting on the floor just as it bolts onto the engine.

It has no A/C.... It's a bit easier than the last set I made which did have A/C and was a auto.

The Turbo he is getting has a internal/external style exhaust housing. I'll make that when I get the turbo. Weather it's internal or external.

The cast iron manifold is off any FWD/GTP engine. I ported it and two holes need to be elongated to bolt up to the head since it's actually bolted on upside down from where it was factory on the GTP.

The other side flange is from the back side of the GTP and I had to fabricate the rest. The merge pipe uses all GM connections... it flexes under heat and the gasket is replaceable GM on the pass. side.

The down pipe will go under the pass. side manifold and then down. 3" to the 3" exhaust under the car.
I'll bolt it up tomorrow so you can see what it looks like installed.

Re: Members New Turbo Headers done.

I got here this morning and the owner of the other Camaro I'd made the turbo kit for dropped off the setup I made to be sent up for powdercoat.

Here is the visual differences between a Non A/C and A/C setup.

                The flanges are different also.

Not alot of changes... the Turbo can be placed just about anywhere in-between the two locations you see here. Just depends on how you want the IC pipes to run.

I've got several other things to do today so I doubt I'll have a chance to put the one set of headers on. I'll re-post that later this week.
                Hope that helps,
                Scott~

I'm curious .. is that a 93-97 bumper in the back? If so got any pics, it looks like its cut and I am curious how it looks. I will be doing the same thing for my intercooler... any suggestions on what to use for the cutting?

Re: Members New Turbo Headers done.

Yes it is... However the intercooler was sitting flat in the car and that's not ideal.

There is a billet grille insert that go's in that area that I've got to make some brackets for so it all looks good.

On the other Camaro I did.... I made passages on either side of the factory middle section. Cut the re-bar out in those areas for better air flow.
Cutting it all out in the middle sure seems to make the bumper floppy. You'd need to re-enforce it to really have it hold up over time.
I'll take pictures once this one is completed.. Just waiting on a turbo so I cand fabricate the downpipe and IC pipes...
Won't take much time after the Turbo gets here.

This may sound stupid but what is a GTP? There are alot of junkyards around my house and I can get my hands on manifolds like that but I need to know what car it is from.

never mind I found out it's a grand prix. I just need to know if I got the manifolds how much will it cost to fab up the turbo manifold.

Re: Members New Turbo Headers done.

Any FWD series2 engine should have the same manifolds. Cast iron on front and then the steel in the back. Make sure you get the cross-over so you can re-use the connections... they allow some "give" for when they grow under heat. With out that give point you'll have alot of cracking occur.

A Set of Pontiac GTP or Standard Grand Prix should be the same. 50-75.00 should cover a set.
You'll need to elongate the holes on the cast Iron manifold (Center holes) I'll snap a picture so you can see how that's done. Port the exhaust ports also. The raw castings are very rough.
The other side you have to use the flange and make a log style header to fit your car. A/C is more challanging but not impossible.

The stock Camaro/firebird manifolds sure seem restrictive to me. And making 3 pipes go under the car is redicuous. I would not want to worry about hitting it on stuff all the time. So that's why I made the stuff this way.
                            Hope that helps,
                            Scott~

                              will series 1 manifolds work?
