I have a 2000 Camaro Coupe. I happened upon a turbo from an 87 regal Grand National for fairly cheap. A buddy and I were thinking of trying to rig a rear mounted system out of it to negate the need for an intercooler. Anyone have thoughts?

Re: Rear Mount Turbo
Eh, a few people have them and make good dyno numbers, but track times were terrible and boost lag was atrocious. Personally, I'd MUCH rather have a conventional turbo setup. Plus FMICs = hotness :cool:sigpic

I fabricated my own Remote Turbo System with intercooler...

Re: Rear Mount Turbo
So lemme just throw this up in the air and correct me if I'm wrong but.. If the post turbo pipes to the intake side are longer then you get boost lag because there is more volume of air to compress? And if that's right does this apply to the pre-turbo exhaust pipes as well? I can't see that this principle would effect the turbine side as much as it would the compressor.

Re: Rear Mount Turbo
I'm not FI, but it seems pretty logical that the longer your pipes are (both) the harder its going to be to get that air moving. Head loss and whatall and whatnot. On the other hand, once it gets going, it might pick up a bit more velocity...which won't matter much I suppose.

Re: Rear Mount Turbo
Go to the STS Site they have all the questions you guys are asking ansewred on a FAQ page.
Basicly you need a smaller A/R housing on the exhaust side of a rear mount turbo since the temps drop and the air/exhaust condenses by the time it reaches the back to spin the exhaust wheel. (why the smaller housing is used to reduce lag/spool)
The longer intake side makes little difference when the drive side is properly sized to the temp and exhaust velocity.
I've got nothing against rear mount setups if done correctly. I would take steps to make the exhaust flow prior to the turbo as good as possible before going that route.
I would intercool it even with a rear mount. It'll always be benifical with a effecient intercooler in line.
Hope that helps,
Scott~
BTW... Is that a stock GN Turbo?

Re: Rear Mount Turbo
Thanks for all the replies. Ease of install and minimum cost is what we're going for. I don't intend to ever race it on a track, just as a street car. I wanted something to give it a little more pull so it performs a little closer to how it looks. The friend who was going to install it with me is a welder, and a good one at that, so i'm not worried about that part.
We had planned on removing the exhaust and running a new pipe from the manifold to the turbo. Then we were going to run the exhaust straight back from the turbo. We were then thinking of running the intake back and to the left to take the place of the former second pipe out of the muffler. I wouldn't have dual exhaust anymore, but the stock isn't true dual exhaust anyway, so i wasn't worrying about it. I was also planning on punching out the cat and running a pipe through that so it looks like its still functional.
It is the stock GN turbo, not the GNX, but a turbo is a turbo and its better than nothing.
