i was thinking of buying a 01 firebird 5spd. i used to have a gtp so i know the 3800 pretty well. i want to put the zzp turbo kit on but was wondering what everyone else was running and what mods you used. i was thinking l67 shortblock, ported camaro heads, thick head gasket to drop compression, hog out the intake and 46lb injectors. also a new fuel pump.

My motor is ALL STOCK, Not touched, We run my custom turbo kit in her, its a 96 firebird w/97 computer. We have a very mild turbo on her just useing a t3/t4 hybread w/57trim. its intercooled, W/ 42# injectors, With 9psi we ran 12.9's in the 1/4 but could have gone faster i think, the car blew the TCI torq converter @ 1/8 mile,:( but she still ran in the 12's. and was a very fun car, Now we had that converter all gone through by JPT and raised the stall to 3000rpm and were going to raise to 12psi, and se what she does. Also need a new tune......
also this car has been a turbo car for about 3-4 yrs we just keep changing the set ups, trying to find one that we like the best and think we did, works very well, and very roomy.. but ill show some pics below, now i need to do some clean up under the hood too. so remember that. Also rounting things cleaner also..

I was going to but didnt have much interest, and the ones that was interested didnt have any $$$$ ya now.....

also this kit i built to get rid of the A/C and everything is above the K-MEMBER. We run a 3"down pipe. with log style headers.

both banks are connected than ran into the turbo. has 1.5" primarys going into 2.5" pipe. jointed than into the turbo. and a 3" down pipe from the turbo back with no muffler and split to 2.5" in back of car with 3.5" resanated tips. sounds good for a 6er... LOL...

            Re: turbo guys step in

hmm on all stock you say. so maybe im thinking overkill. my buddy and his bro both have 86 z28's. one is all motor and runs hi 12 the other runs spray and hits low 12.
so maybe if i just do the heads since i might get a free set for doing some labor for a buddy and hog them out for better flow and drop the comp a little it might help. i def want to get a cam. thats step one for me. was gonna score a set of grandprix manifolds but how much are your flanges?
any pics of the intercooler setup?
my gtp on a stage 2 cam, intake, ic, and ported sc ran 12.3 i think i can beat that with a firebird. little bit lighter and the wheels turn in the proper place lol.

I sell my flanges for $90 shipped.. they are CNC. very nice.. work great.. The intercooler set up on ower car is basicly standered, Cause bro wanted it to be seen, So its right up front with round holes cut in the center for fresh air. But i normaly lay them down and get the air from under the car...

how much for the manifold setup? just the hotside. It will need to accomodate my AC though.

This set up wont accomodate the A/C, Unless you use a 2.5 " down pipe and i dont recumend that...... Where are you located??

I'm located in tucson AZ. I was looking at your pics and I dont understand the set up. Is it a twin turbo set up? Where is the merge pipe?

what would you recomend then? ill be keeping the a/c
i was going to get a plog from zzp and a stock rear exhaust manifold from a grand prix. then just use zzp's kit and switch a little bit of pipe to work rwd.

Don't bother with anything until you break stuff. My stock (115k when turbo was put on) engine takes a beating (now has 127K+). The only thing I have done is injectors (57#), turbo kit, and HPtuners. The valve covers have never been off. It has been turbo'd for 1.5 years, on 20 psi for over a year, up to 25 a couple of times. I drive the hell out of it and beat it to death, but the engine is the only part of the drivetrain that has not broke. I have broke the stock 2 piece drive shaft, burnt a trans, and broke a rear. The car on street tires has gone 12.5-12.8 @117-118 over 20 times on a few trips to the track, and made an 11.7 and 11.6 last time out on drag radials at 118-119 mph. Granted, I do run a mix of race gas and pump gas, and meth injection with a conservative tune (by me). But it has lived so far, despite being told the engine needs to be done to go over 10 psi. I can't complain :D

tbo id like to see pics if you have them. i want to run the zzp z7 setup just because i dont have to go fishing for parts. if i dont do the heads im sure i will just do rockers to help the motor breath more. also a tb wont hurt. any recomendations on intercooler? i was definitly thinking about meth injection but i want to stay on reg pump gas so ill probably let it top out at 15psi untill she pops then build a l67 to handle 30

I'd have to agree with TBO98 The engine is a stout little peice that can handle alot of abuse with no detonation. Like he said TUNE is a large part of keeping it together!
