  • Coolant lines for turbo

Does anyone know the best way to run the coolant lines for the GT35R turbo. I found out last week that I need to run them to keep the warranty on the turbo since it keeps the temps down. The garrett dealer said to just tee off the top off the radiator where the overflow coolant goes out to the resivior. But I don't know if he understands that our PSI rating on our caps are 18 PSI then it opens. So I don't know if I have to tee off the heater hoses or something like that. I do like the idea of it coolong the turbo more so there is no coking. I live in AZ so it will get hot. I did noticed today driving my temp was at 177 degrees but is that enough PSI for the cap to let water into the overflow res. which would then cylce through the turbo. I tried searching but I found mostly imports that had outlets and inlets on their heads or thermo stats. Also does the turbo cylce the water or does it need to be pressurized? When I pick up my turbo this week, I will ask the guy how I should route it , but if someone has some ideas , please post . Thanks in advance.

use something of that nature.. but instead of installing the sender there just run that to the turbo and do the same thing for the outlet.. but on the other side.. i plugged the watercooling ports on my vr4 but i didn't need them

Damm, that is a great idea, do you know what sizes the flow line and return line are for the 3800 heater hoses? I called the dealer guy today and he said I might need to take it off the heater hoses since they do need to be pressurized. Thanks for the link.

I think I have an idea for the sizes thanks again for the link, just got my oil feed Tee today for my -4an with a restrictor, and I have my -10A return line & fittings. Will pick up the turbo Thur.

So, I think I got it figured out, I'm going to Tee off the water temp sensor to feed the turbo, then I will use one of those fittings in the link for the return from the turbo into the lower radiator hose, which is 1 1/2". Just got to make sure they make a tee for the water temp sensor , will find out tomorrow.

I'm glad I went with this turbo that uses coolant lines for extra cooling, esp. living in AZ where it gets 115+ in the summer. Thats why I went with a big intercooler also. At first I was pissed that I had to route coolant lines but now after thinking about the cooling effect I'm glad to.

Well if and probably when my turbo goes I'll be going that route. I like the extra precautions. I was thinking about getting an oil cooler that runs into the turbo. I'll have to do some research to find out if that's even safe for pressure.

i can only assume it is.. cause my vr4 is set up like that... and the car is really bad about having weak oil pressure..

So what you're saying is the car has weak oil pressure even without the oil cooler?

correct.. but thats just how that car runs.. there should not be a problem with running an oil cooler like that..

                            Re: Coolant lines for turbo

I got the coolant tee today for going off the EGT sensor, it is a 3/8" Tee and just a 3/8" expander then a 3/8" to 1/8" adapter and your good to go off of the sensor location. Just some info for someone who searches how to run coolant lines for their turbo. With the adapter VR4GASM posted you can run the return stainless line to the bottom of the radiator and put the 1/8" line into it so it recylces back into the radiator. The top line from the radiator is the feed into the engine just to let people know so the water wouldn't flow if it was tapped into that spot. The coolant should be cooled after flowing through the radiator and through the thermo and lower intake. I like this spot because the EGT is tee'd off from there so you know what temp is going through the turbo. What do you think? Sounds like a good idea?

Definitely. I'll be looking back at this thread if I ever get a turbo that requires it.
