What size spring should I get for the BOV?

    According to this chart:

    Vacuum reading -22 to -23 in/Hg use spring -12 PSI (-24 in/Hg)
    -18 to -21 in/Hg use spring -11 PSI (-24 in/Hg)
    -14 to -17 in/Hg use spring -9 PSI (-24 in/Hg)
    -10 to -13 in/Hg use spring -7 PSI (-24 in/Hg)Vacuum Reading Use Spring -22 and -23 in/Hg -12 PSI (-24 in/Hg) -18 and -21 in/Hg -11 PSI (-24 in/Hg) -14 and -17 in/Hg -9 PSI (-24 in/Hg) -10 and -13 in/Hg -7 PSI (-24 in/Hg)
I need the spring that corresponds to my vacuum reading, so I was wondering if someone could tell me what the vacuum reading is likely to be.

    I drive a 99 v6, and I'm putting a turbonetics t60-1 in it at 10 pounds of boost.

I don't know what factors change the vacuum pressure exactly, but if
I need to add more info let me know.

Also, what would be the ballpark for correctly sizing the BOV.

I assume that if you get one that's too big it will be a bit sluggish...
And if you get one that's too small, it will open quickly but not let enough pressure out in time to be of any use.

So, spring weight and general size are my questions.

    Thanks in advance.

I can tell you tomorrow where the vacuum reading is. I'm having the same issue with my bov. However, I'm adding and taking away spacers/washers to try and get the right amount of tension in the spring.

      Re: BOV Spring

On my Tial I got a 11 PSI on it, then switched to a 7-8 PSI spring since I got a manual boost controller and you can up the boost about double the spring rate, so I could adjust it up to 14-16 PSI if need be. Which is fine for me, or it might be half the spring rate not sure. To replace the spring was a b!tch needed a clamp to hold it while undoing the screws and putting them back in.

lmao, had fun doin that huh?

I apparently didn't have enough pressure because adding that 1 extra washer to my bov made my car consistently fast. I had no idea. I'm also only pushing 6-7psi right now. I noticed this since I started to really pay attention to my boost gauge. I need a boost controller.

To the OP, I'm pretty sure the vacuum was at like -20 or real close to it. lmao I forgot to make a mental note. Sorry.

^ The Tial doesn't use washers just big @ss springs the size of your hand.LOL You have to use a clamp , no way someone is going to do that by hand and get the screws in, I'm glad I bought the lower spring rate because I didn't know the boost controllers could up the PSI that much.

            Re: BOV Spring

Wait now... what do boost controllers have to do with the BOV? Are you giving me BOV spring recommendations or wastegate spring recommendations?

It's getting close to time to buy both.

Also, has anyone seen the pipe with a pre-welded flange for Tial BOVs on E-bay?
It comes up when you search for "tial bov".

            Looks like a good buy.

I bought my pipe on ebay for my Tial 50mm BOV 3" ALM pipe. Almost $50 shipped. Boost Controller will let the wastegate let more PSI in. Just search Manual or electric boost controllers and read up on them.

I got a Turbo Smart manual boost controller ($90) which was rated pretty decent for my goals anyways. I figure with a 7-8 PSI spring I can turn it up a few and hit 10-12 PSI. My street driven car.

I was honestly about to make another post asking about boost controllers but hey.. 90 bucks. What site did ya get it from? I'm at the point where I want more power. I need to be pushed into my seat a little more. Just that, a few suspension mods, a new carrier and i'm freakin set. What the hell am I gonna do after that?! I don't want to go back to playing video games 24/7.

                        Re: BOV Spring

I'm already familiar with manual boost controllers. I know they don't have anything to do with the spring pressure of a BOV, so I was wondering if people were getting the two confused because they were talking about using a manual boost contoller to increase the BOV spring pressure.

So I'm thinking of using a 9psi spring for the BOV and then shimming it with two 1/8" washers to bring it up to about 10.3-10.4 psi.

I read something from another forum saying that the shimmed 9psi spring will open wider than the 11psi spring but will still hold pressure until the desired 10.3psi is reached.

They backed it up with a bunch of fancy math so I was inclined to believe them.

This is for the original 50mm version.

Sorry about that I got the 2 mixed up again since I had just changed out my Tial 38mm wastegate spring. I bought the Tial 50mm version 2 BOV with 10 PSI spring. I haven't looked into mine just so it holds at 10 PSI at least. I had a XS bov serious which I had to use spacers to dial it in, when I ran my powerdyne.

There's no way I would spend $90 on a manual boost controller. They are
                            not complex pieces at all.

I ran this one with zero problems, then I stepped up to an electronic one.
You can also build it yourself if you want. There are a few "how to's" on it.

THat just look bad , I'm sure it works but if I mount mine I want it to look good, I'll pay $90 for one, no problem. It matches my theme.
