need help with powerdyne ASAP (video included)

Ok, so I got the powerdyne installed and everything, but have a strange noise. :cry: See video for noise.




Things I KNOW its NOT:

1. too loose/tight belt
2. impeller rubbing on casing (took discharge off and reset it, no marks on either impeller or housing)
3. Pulley hitting/rubbing anything
4. Nothing loose such as a spacer or mounting bracket
5. Bad bearing in the blower itself (I rebuilt it right before the install, AND when the blower is out and you spin it by hand it sounds fine.)
6. Piping hitting/rubbing anything
7. Every other obvious thing to check.

My thoughts are maybe a bad bearing in the ribbed idler that came with it, or something rubbing that I can't see...

ANY thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!!

Sounds like a bad bearing.

^ JUST replaced them in the charger. Put ~2 miles on the charger since its been on. Also took the charger off and it sounds fine when spun out of the car. FML this thing is eating my lunch. Think it could be a bad bearing in the ribbed idler behind the powerdyne?

Use a mechanics stethoscope and see if you can pin point the source.

^ Don't have one. LOL. That and if its a bearing in the idler pulley, kinda hard to get anything on that....

I am at my wits end here, need my car to drive down to college tomorrow, might just have to rip the PD out and put it off for a while...:(

Go buy a length of tubing from a hardware store (or a garden hose works if it's short). Although the skinnier, the better. That'll work about as well as a stethescope.

Put one end in your ear and start probing around till you here the noise. You'd be surprised how well it works.

I'm almost willing to say that it's your impeller. It sound like it is scrapping the inside of the casing. Take it out. Open up the casing and see if it's scrapped. If it is then get a 1000grit sand paper and polish it out.

This is somewhat typical for all SC. the casing and the impeller are so close to each other that a slight damage to it can cause gouging.


Now if this is not the problem. Then check your idler pulley and tensioner pulley. When these 2 go out it sounds like crap.

If not then then it's your bearings.

Sorry. I should have told you guys I think I figured it out. I cracked the casing under the large bearing that sits in the case, so I took it to a machine shop and had it welded. Well it was a little rough under where that bearing sits, so I sanded it back down to flat (or what I thought was flat.) Well I am guessing that I didn't get it quite flat and now the end of the shaft is contacting the casing.

So I am doing the mature thing and hoping the hardened shaft will wear the aluminum casing down and it will stop making the noise. LOL.

Also I did get a stethoscope and this is how I found where the noise was coming from.

Chances are you will get small pieces of aluminum in the bearing as it self clearances. You would be much better off having the machine shop clearance it for you.

I got something similar to that and it was back side of the tensioner was rubbing with the support bold of the new tensioner bracket once you push down on the tensioner and tighten it.

^ Yeah, nothings rubbing outside of the supercharger. This is definitely inside the charger.

I also know the best thing to do would be to have the machine shop take care of it. But I doubt they can remove that bearing without damaging it. (the last one had to weld to it to remove it.) So we will see about the machine shop....
