  • Battery relocation questions

I'm thinking of relocating the battery to the trunk for three great reasons. 1) its better for drag racing, 2) its better for handling, 3) It will give me better traction in the winter time

SO, with that being said, what do I need to do to go about doing this? I know a couple members on here have done it. I know I will need a battery box, and a bunch of cables. I think I am going to get a distributer block and put it at the front. Attach the small red positive terminal stuff to it, run the alt wire to it as well, and then just have 1 positive and 1 negative wire running all the way to the trunk.

I drive this car all year round, and the winters get pretty cold...would I have a problem firing up in the cold with the battery in the trunk?

and lastly, I will need to run a cutoff switch (for drag racing purposes). Since it is a daily driver, I would like to get a clean install behind the rear licence plate if possible. Is it hard to remove the switch once it is installed? or is it something I can kind of just pull off, then slap back on in a matter of seconds come race day?

    Re: Battery relocation questions

My suggestion is just get snow tires, that seems like a lot of bs for minimal gain.

Thats why I never bothered on the TA.

Get a light weight racing battery and change it on race day.

I have snow tires...I've read on the boards that it does make a nice difference for traction, and it'll balance the weight out nice... It doesnt seem that bad, except for maybe trying to do that switch up...I've seen guys fit them in perfectly where the spare tire used to be...Technically I really already have the wiring there...I got 4 guage wire for the amp running from the front all the way to that side...so if I can use that, it'll really make life easy...

I had mine installed in the trunk and decided to remove it. I was having charging problems because of the voltage drop due to the long routing of the battery cables.

what size cable were you using? I can't see such a short distance causing a problem if you use a big enough cable?

4 gauge cable is nowhere near large enough. If your adding the disconnect for tech reasons at the track it needs to be in a very accessible location and labeled, so removing it would not be a 5 minute job. The charging wire on the alt also needs to be run to the back of the car separately, so the car shuts off when the disconnect is turned off.

What size guage should I be using? 2 or 0? I can always use the 4 gauge to pull the new wire through, although it's not that hard to run it...

I don't want to fully take apart the switch, I was just trying to figure out a way that I can have it set up behind the licence plate somehow, and maybe just remove the licence plate at the race track...maybe shim the plate forward a bit so that it clears the switch, and then maybe take off the lever handle of the switch so that it doesnt stick out as far when not in use...then at the track all I do is pull the plate off, and pop the sliding switch handle on? Or is something like this not realistic?

I dont want people to see it when I'm DD'ing it...not only will people play with it, but I dont have nearly a fast enough car that I would feel comfortable flaunting it around and leaving it out in the open...I just need it for tech purposes...

0 or 00 would be best. Look for the Push on/off switch. You would have to drill a hole in a tail light or rear panel but then all you would do to disable it is unhook the rod that sticks out the back. I think Flaming river makes one like this.

I got 46 when I searched Summit, some are not NHRA legal so read the fine print.

Yup, I was thinking of getting this one...

Do you think my battery would be harder to turn over in the winter time though?...I mean some cars come stock with the battery in the trunk...

                      Re: Battery relocation questions

I have a summit box with the biggest Optima in the rear with I think 1ga. or 0ga. for power going down the passenger side with a 80 amp breaker in the rear oush button for off and 80 amp fuse up front. And a 1 ga. for ground in the rear which I have both my amps wired off of for my stereo. Also have my Dyna battery, 8lbs or 11 lbs up front, I have a relay I haven't wired in yet so if the power drains off the front batt it won't start to drain the rear one. Also have Caspers Voltage Booster that goes to the TPS and ALT. and after 70% throttle boosts 1.2 volts more voltage. I will be looking into a 160 amp ALt. in the future just because I run my stereo alot. I haven't had a problem starting at, all except for if I leave my stereo on when working on it, too many gauges and little stuff that draws off of. Just make sure you cut the extra off but don't cut too short. I think I cut about 2-4feet off mine.

what are these voltage boosters and how much are they? And Steve, you've probably never tried to start yours in the winter have you?

Its Caspers Voltage Booster for a Buick 3800, just had to modify the ALt hook up and dremel down a plastic piece that connects to the ALt. Works great I have my Aeroforce gauge so it can read the Volts when I go over 70% throttle, get a good 1.2 more volts. I got it from Caspers Electronics. No winters maybe 30-40 degrees in the mornings at most, I live in AZ where we don't have winters.LOL I think I would of got a 160 amp Alt. if I had to do it again but the booster works great.

Well I guess I'll be one of the first to do this and run it in the winter time....I'll look into these boosters to, where'd you buy them from?
