I'm getting some significant engine chatter that I can hear when the hood is shut. It sounded like maybe one of the pulleys was going out, but I took the serpentine belt off and fired the car up for a couple seconds and still heard the sound so its not any of the pulleys, so it must be internal noise. What could cause a chattering noise like this? Thanks

Does the sound go away when the hood is opened?

It could be any pulley under there. Try using a piece of hose or a mechanic's stethoscope to listen around and pinpoint the noise.

Try listening to it with the clutch press in to see if it goes away

its an automatic, i cant tell which side of the engine its comming from, i said i took the belt off and its still there so its not a pulley, the sound stays with the hood open, 86k on the car, the oil is fresh and is changed every 3000 miles.

                  any ideas guys?

possibly a lifter. you'd have to see if one is collapsed

                          Re: Engine chatter

Could be a dry rotted crank balancer, thouhgt mine was a rod at first but after taking the belt off and doing some research it was my balancer that had dry rotted from the inside and was out of wack, $100 later running smooth again.
