• ran out of fuel !

Beware the simplist things in life can cost !
The other day I ran out of fuel looking for a petrol station (they are all closing down here in the UK). Having walked 2 miles to get some I expected my car to just fire up and go but nothing. It was trailered home and after a few calls one of the few experts here said it was common for the pump to burn out after sucking air ! Expect a big bill to remove tank !
Anyone else had similar probs ?

Never heard of the fuel pump burning out that fast just because you ran out of fuel. I'd have it tested first before you get that "Big Bill!".

I dont feel bad for anyone that has run out of gas, i mean that gauge is there for a reason, plus most of us know when our car is low anyways becuase of how long we have been driving.

it depends on how long he had the key still turned on after it ran out of gas.(the pump will still run until you turn the key off....correct????) i know they will burn out though cuz the gas is what cools the pump off.

depends... when i bought my car i didnt know the gas guage was off by about 1/4 tank, i know this now but i was seriously pissed off when i found out via running out of gas. you cant really trust the fbody gas gauge as much as other cars.

Some people's gas gauges are off or in my case don't even work.

every post i have seen from you is bashing other people trying to make you look smart.

If you acually read the post, he said he ran out of gas LOOKING for a gas station... its not like he totally ignored the gauge.

Anyways, what happened to your car is the pump lost its "prime" I have seen it happen on many cars that run out of gas. Im sorry, but i cant help you in fixing the problem, but i do know that that is the cause.

I have got several emails from people thanking me for helping or guilding them through a project. You can view several thank you bobby posts, and i got this idea from bobby and bobby had the anwser. I can give you severl car doman web site address and you can see peoples cars that have my ideas installed on them. Bashing...i dont think so. Every thing i say here is with a smile and joking.

oh and victimizati0n,,, NOT BASHING YOUR IDEA, BUT your priming problem occurs on cars with the fuel pump mounted away from the tanks,, usually not eletric fuel pumps. You will never have a priming problem if you have a full tank and the fuel pump in the tank.

                      not really true.

If you ran out of gas, that means your lines are totally empty, the prime wolnt put the gas back in them. I have seen it happen on many newer impalas (the 00-05 years) and the prime was the problem.

I have a fishtank, and when you empty the filter, or acciedently get air in the line, you have to fill it up to get it to work again, even though it is self priming... like when the power goes out, the water stays in there, and works fine, but when you empty the water out, it doesnt work.

I may be wrong, but i have seen this problem, and that was the cause.

Yes i know the fish tank problem, i have one, but look, the tube that feeds the water into the filter goes above the water line, there for the cheap pump that these filtering systems use cant create a vacuum to suck the water. On our fuel pumps the whole pump in suburged in gas, there for it does not have to suck the water to get it into the pump, its already lever with it. It would be like taking our fish tank filters and putting the whole thing into the tank, then it would start pumping right away. As for the impalas i dont know,, maybe they have the fuel pumps mounted in a remote locaton.

                          they are submerged.

But my point was that it cant get the fuel up the fuel lines to deliver it in the engine.

Maby you can put alot of gas in, and try cranking for it a little, it might get gas in up the lines (im not sure how the fuel pump works at startup though)

I dont know the details of it, but I know in my old car (95 monte carlo) I ran out of gas a couple times. just filled it up and after a a little extended cranking it always worked fine.
