  • Engine heats up very quickly, and very hot

After about 2 minutes from a cold start this morning (I didn't drive it all weekend), I reached almost 230 degrees while doing a constant 35 mph. I'm not leaking coolant. Reservoir and radiator have plenty. I changed the thermostat a few months ago.

    Any ideas?

My guess would be a defective Thermostat...Yes, it does happen from time-to-time.

Change it again before you do some serious damage.

no oil in the coolant? I agree, start with the small stuff, I would do a full coolant flush and replace the thermostat again...make sure you fill the coolant up properly so that you do not get any air in the lines...and make sure your rad cap is on nice and tight, and not defective.

replace thermostat and get all air out and see what happens. also how does the radiator look? it isn't filled up with gunk is it? could be a clog somewhere in the system from sludge buildup by old coolant

Will replace thermostat and flush radiator tonight and see what I get. How do you get air in the lines? How do you avoid it?

          Will update tomorrow.

          Thanks.

you get air in the lines by not filling it properly...there is a procedure to do it...haynes manual covers it...I believe you pour x amount in the resovoir, x amount in the rad...turn the car on and let it idle, and continue to add until it is full....something along those lines...otherwise you get air pockets and that will lead to overheating as well...

what if after you fill up you colant levels you open the bleed screw in the thermo housing that way it would let out all the air.

I suggest you check the fans also to make sure they are working

Replaced the thermostat, thermostat gasket, and the housing gasket. Not leaking coolant.

I drove the car immediately afterward, and I thought it was fixed. The car stayed at around 190 for the majority of the drive, which comprised about 10 minutes.

Then I get up this morning, and the temperature got up to 240, and looked like it wanted to climb higher before I got where I had to get. I had to stop twice on the way to work. Checked coolant levels, and they were full. Or at least certainly sufficient to eliminate lack of coolant as a problem.

The previous thermostat had some orange sludge on it, and there is some sludge visible in the radiator. But that's been there since I bought the car in 05.

With the exception of a starter, every problem I've had with this car has been cooling related.

Update: Just thought of something. The hose leading up to the thermostat housing was replaced about 3 months ago, along with the previous thermostat. It didn't occur to me to look at that.

Did you bleed the air from the coolant? If not, then here's a (very) quick writeup: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you...cooling_system

That brown sludge has been a concern of mine for quite some time! I absolutely HATE dexcool!!! Only a handful of people I talk to never had an issue with it, but most of the others have. The brown silicone-sludge that builds up clogs coolant ports, and I'm surprised that more GM cars haven't overheated from it yet.

The 2nd day I owned my GTO, I did two modifications:
                    1) I changed all of the stock brake pads to ceramic's
                    and
                    2) I flushed the sh*tty A$$ dexcool from it and went green

I didn't bleed the air. But I've never bled the air, and I've flushed the coolant a whooooole lotta times. I'll do as you say, tho, so we can eliminate it.

Get a flush kit from a place like Napa. Drain the radiator. Cut the heater inlet house and install the little T pipe. Connect a hose to it, open the radiator cap and turn on the water. Take your T-stat out too. Then watch all the nasty start to flow out. Also get one of those flush agents and run it in the car for a bit, then reflush. Cleaned my system out really good. Replace with green coolant not Dexcool.

Where is the bleeder screw for the coolant on a v6?

Mine was located top of the thermostat housing. It just unscrewed and I could easily bleed the system.

As stated above, check your cooling fans too. Spin them with your hand (engine off) to see if they're binding up. Also, make sure they're kicking on and spinning at full speed when the engine gets hot.
