Re: Engine heats up very quickly, and very hot

Dont make it harder then it really is. If the coolant looks good and your oil is clean and not milky. Just go ahead and swap the new thermostat in.

Make sure the coolant is topped off in the radiator. and then close it all down.. open the bleeder screw (near the Tstat) and start the car. You will hear the air blowing through and once the air is out of the system a steady stream of coolant will come out. Once that starts. close the bleeder screw and clean up the coolant mess.

    Call it good.

If your low on coolant just fill it up however you want and just use the bleeder screw to get the air out of the system.

I had my car down to the heads and put it all back together, I paid no attention to how I filled the car up just made sure it was right. Once I was done I went ahead and closed everything up and bled the coolant off.

      I will do this tonight.

Incidentally, I am overdue for an oil change. But doesn't milky oil imply water in the oil? And does that contribute to heating problems?

        Okay.

Opened the bleeder screw. The car heated up in due time. Air started hissing out, followed by steam. No liquid, just vapor in intermittent blasts. I waited for as long as I could before I started to get worried about the temperature, as it was approaching 240 again. Eventually, seeing no change in the results of the bleeding process, I closed it and turned the car off. Coolant level was still reasonably normal. Reservoir stayed full.

For S&G, I removed the radiator hose and cleaned it out, which yielded nothing. Did the same for the thermostat housing. I took the thermostat out completely, and left it out. Reattached everything, took the car for a drive, and it started overheating again. So it's not the T-stat.

I thought perhaps my temperature sensor was going wacky, but there have been times when either steam or smoke could be seen emanating from beneath the hood. I've no doubt the car is as hot as it says it is.

could the radiator cap be bad by chance, they are also a cheap easy thing to change for reassurance that it is good?

If it is the radiator cap I believe they are 18lb.

all i know is a radiator cap is like $6 and could be a way that air is getting in if it isn't sealing properly

I'm beginning to suspect the water pump. I changed it two years ago, but it's possible.

If I were to disconnect the hose leading to the thermostat, and then start the car, would coolant coming through that hose confirm that the pump is working correctly?

At this time, the thermostat has been removed entirely from the equation. I took it out completely.

On the air topic, doesn't air bubble its way out through the reservoir?

you should run your car and turn on the heat , If heat DOES NOT come out its the water pump or the thermostat

you should put your thermo in some boiling water and see if it opens up

You know, I tried that yesterday when the car was getting awful hot, and I was wondering why the air wasn't getting hot.

The thermostat has been removed entirely, and the car still gets hot.

Going to troubleshoot the water pump.

waterpumps are cheap and easy to replace. see if the old one has warranty before you buy a new one. i have always heard a water pump goes bad whenever its leaking coolant from weep hole or when it just completely stops working or if the bearings are making god awful noises.

I know. I've been trying to avoid replacing it, because I replaced it two years ago, and when I did, the head of one of the retaining screws snapped off, leaving the stud in the hole.

But to hell with it. I'll take all the other bolts off, then see if the pump comes off and over the stud. Then go at it with a vice-grip.

I just got done having a heating issue, and I found out my fan was only working intermittently. I ended up having to run a manual switch to it (yes, I checked/changed relays and fuses, there is a short somewhere between the relay and the fan).

Not saying its your problem, but worth checking out.
