i am beginning to wander now if its the fans cause they should be on high the whole time its past half way are they? also a pump won't work then work. you stated the car was fine for 10 minutes then all of a sudden it started getting hot. makes no sense to me.

Update: Removed water pump. It doesn't seem to be at all wobbly or otherwise malfunctioning. It's a pretty simple part isn't it? The impeller didn't look damaged or wobbly or anything. Unless anyone else here has any ideas, I'm going to buy another gasket and put it back on.

      So far:

      - Not losing coolant.
      - Replaced Thermostat.
      - Water pump looks fine.
      - Fan is working fine.

Should I buy a new pump just to eliminate it?

The fans turn on once it reaches about 210. The car isn't fine for 10 minutes. It just takes about ten minutes for it to get to the worrisome temperature. When it's stone cold, as in it hasn't been driven for a day or two, the temperature meter stays below the lowest point on the guage for about 2 or 3 minutes after starting. Then it starts to creep up gradually over the next 5 or 6 minutes until it passes the 210 mark, when the fans come on. Then I only have a minute or two before it starts flirting with the next mark, which I think is at 240(?). I've never had the guts to push it farther than that point.

Question: Which way does coolant flow in our engines? Does the thermostat let coolant into the engine, or out of the engine?

if your system isn't pressurizing then get a new water pump. since you have it already out i'd buy a new one with a warranty and call it a day. it seems you have ruled everything else out. and just because the water pump appears to be in good shape doesn't mean it is.

x2... replace the water pump with one that has a warranty... if you bleed the system it should eventually spit out coolant, if all that's coming out is steam, it's steam from the coolant that is just sitting in your engine because it's not circulating through. I think that if it was anything else, such as the radiator cap, you would be leaking coolant. It's either the water pump, or there's a clog, but if the coolant looks okay then the pump is more likely than a clog. Remove the water pump, vise grip that broken stud out and then you can buy new studs from GMpartsdirect.com or a dealer

Okay. I got that stud out with a vicegrip, thank God.

Will buy a new water pump from Carquest (sick of Autozone crap) tomorrow. Money's tight as a drum at the moment.
