  • new Firebird owner needs help with speedometer after 4:10 gears!

Hey guys! My name is Marty, and I'm a new owner of a 2001 Firebird V6. I have an urgent question about my speedo with 4:10 rear end gears. I thought that I could use the Hypertech Power Programmer III to adjust for the rear end gear change.....what I DIDN'T know was that it only lets you change up to 3:42! I've tried adjusting it to the smallest tire size it will let you use, and the speedo is still off over 20%. Does anyone know of any way to use the programmer to fix this, or do I have to just sell it and get the Hypertech Speedometer Calibrator? Will that even work with 4:10 gears? Any help would be appreciated, this speedo is driving me nuts!

I dont have any experience with hypertech, cant help you there. You could do a mail order tune ranging from $150 - $225 through pcmforless or texas speed. The last option would be hp tuners which is worth purchasing if your going to be regularly modding your car. Who knows, maybe someone on the board has hp tuners that lives near you? The plus side is that any of these tuning options can do more than just fix your speedo: fan settings, rev limiter, speed limiter etc.

mail order tune or buy hptuners is the best route, or find someone in your area with hptuners to do it for ya. Where are you located?

I'm in central North Carolina. And honestly, sending my pcm off doesn't appeal to me at all, I guess because I've never done that. I'd rather find a way to fix the speedo on the car. And I also don't need any more things adjusted really. With it being a 5 speed and having the 4:10 gears, it flies. I didn't think I would like the gears in the beginning, I thought it would rev too high like on the interstate. But it's not as bad as I thought, and the instant power is awesome. I just found something made by Granatelli called the GranSpeedo Speedometer Calibrator, and they guarantee it'll work on my car. Anyone ever used it? Or if you have any other ideas, please let me hear them. I just put the Hypertech on ebay, as soon as it sells I'm gonna order the Granatelli I think, unless I hear of something better. Thanks for the input so far guys!

again, find someone that has hptuners near you to do it for ya. Or you can buy a mail order tune, they send you the pcm and then you just send back your stocker for the core refund. No downtime for you then if that worries you

How would I go about finding someone in my area that has that? Call around to various tuning shops? What kinds of shops would normally have that?

check v6 and v8 boards and make posts asking for people near you with hptuners. Will cost them $100 to get the 2 credits to do your car unless they already have the 2001 v6 cars unlocked
