serpentine belt squeeling without clutch engaged.....
serpentine belt squeeling without clutch engaged.....
Ok my serpentine belt has starting sqeaking/squeeling for the past week or so, but I have noticed something. If I am at a red light with the car in neutral and the clutch not engaged is squeels, if I engage the clutch the squeeling stops.
So, clutch engaged no squeeling. Clutch disengaged there is squeeling.
What causes this ?
Would replacing the serpentine belt fix this problem, or is it something to do with the clutch ?
Re: serpentine belt squeeling without clutch engaged.....
i had a squeeking problem with my car too it took forever to figureout what it was but it endend up being the ac compressor the pulley on it had play so it was squeeking. check all the pulleys to see if there tight. but if its a old belt it may just be that.
Re: serpentine belt squeeling without clutch engaged.....
now is it the clutch being engaged that makes it stop squealing or is it the raise in RPM's i would try free rev to see if it makes it stop or while driving push the clutch in and see if it's there. if it's not i'd just say it's a simple belt that needs replaced.

there would be such a minimal change in rpm when engauging/disengauging the clutch in neutral it would not make a serp belt stop squealing.. it MAY be 50 rpm difference for a split second

your right although he said at a stop light with the clutch in so that to me means he's about to take off when engaging the clutch so that means obviously he's raising the rpms so he can take off. so i still say clutch is not the problem and just to replace the belt

he is in neutral 100% of the time, just letting the clutch in/out.. or at least that is what i got out of it
if the squealing changes when the rpm's are changed, then yes, it sounds like a serp belt
just take the damn belt off and start the car? that will tell you if its the belt don't go throwing money into it till you know what it is..
Yup, but falling on deaf ears.
Belts by themselves do not squeal. A belt and a pulley or sheve may squeal. A bearing may squeal. A fualty pump may squeal. A faulty a/c clutch may squeal. A cat caught under the hood might squeal (for a short while). But a belt by itself would sound more like... well, it wouldn't sound at all. A "belt squeal" may be anything but the belt, and even if he does just buy a new one, what he doesn't realize is whatever is causing the old one to start squealing will eventually cause the new one to squeal. Even if the new one doesn't start squealing, a belt shouldn't just squeal unless it's stretched or very worn. Perhaps whatever is wrong will eventually just fail and leave him stranded someplace, then we'll get to find out what is really wrong, provided he stops the car before it overheats and destroys the engine because of a lack of coolant circulation.
The prudent thing to do would be to figure out 1) if it's actually related to the belt, 2) if so, if there is proper belt tension, and 3) what if there is proper tension, what component in the engine is actually rubbing the belt causing it to squeal, or 4) what component is doing the squealing.
Hey guys. For starters I’ve always been a big car guy, I love all types of cars and can appreciate all types of engineering. I’ve always been a Chevy...
