  • EGR question

OK so I was woundering if the EGR is only an emissions device? What are the reprecutions of removing the EGR and blocking off the holes? I Don't have emissions where I live and NO inspection of any kind. I have not pinned down the EGR as the problem but I am just curious..

    thanks

    Re: EGR question

You will get many different opinions regarding this, but my experience is as follows...

Removing the EGR may cause the engine to ping under load. This is not good and will damage the engine over time. If you are not having problems with the EGR just leave it alone.

      Re: EGR question

got it, As I stated I don't know if that is the problem or not. I was throwing a EGR pintle circuit code but I cleaned out the duct in the intake and I hope that takes care of it. I am just still receiving a multi randon misfire that I am having a hard time tracking down.
I have checked the plugs and wires, replaced the pcv and as stated cleaned out the EGR duct I ahve yet to check the coil packs but ehhh I don't know might get to that next..

        Re: EGR question

I used to have a random misfire issue. It was very hard to pinpoint which coil pack was causing it, so I replaced all 3. Problem solved, never happened again.

I just fixed a random misfire, my fuel pressure reg was bad causing it to suck gas into the vacuum line. also cause problems starting when engine was warm. if your getting that pull off the vacuum line on the FPR and see if there is gas coming out

HMM that is interesting.. were you seeing high fuel pressure? or any other indications of a problem?

                Re: EGR question

car was running rich and when doing a fuel pressure test, key ON engine OFF pressure went up to normal then steadily dropped off to 20-30, engine ON idling saw 44psi fuel pressure, only other noticeable symptom was that the car would start great when it was cold, or if restarting within 10 minutes of driving, but if restarting after driving after ten minutes or until 4-5hours laters would have to crank for 30-40 seconds and hit the accelerator to get it to start

                  Re: EGR question

EGR is there to lower NOx gases. It removes oxygen because exhaust gas has no oxygen and its never used during WOT. There is no benefit to removing it.

                    Re: EGR question

If it helps you can get a random misfire code from a slipping transmission. The PCM throws that code when it sees random quick changes in crankshaft speed

                      Re: EGR question

Thanks all for the input. I think I have ruled it out as an egr problem. I am stepping back for a couple of days and comming at it with a fresh mind. I am going to do a full tune up on it, and a compression test before I move forward. Probably should have started there in the first place.

96Black. I did not know about the throwing a misfire code because of a slipping trans but thankfully it is throwing the code in park at an idle so...
