ah i forgot about the bracket, i was thinking you meant 6 bolts on the u joint, makes sense now! idk why they put those 2 piece drive shafts on the camaros, doesnt even seem like a good idea, i laugh everytime i see my old one laying in the garage

my car is a 99 and i had a 2 piece, but i have another friend with a 99 but his is auto and his is one piece

Did you upgrade to a one piece steel, or all the way to aluminum?

I'm curious as to the seat-of-the-pants difference you felt in swapping the DS if you went to aluminum, as that's my next endeavor I think...

Hmm... Still a worthwhile investment though?
I'd hate to drop 120 on the ds when it could be better spent somewhere else...

I've already done intake/exhaust. I could redo my exhaust, but it'd get spendy pretty quick... So I started looking into drivetrain and suspension upgrades.

if you have the 2 piece, i would upgrade, but if you have the steel 1 piece i wouldnt worry about it, get some headers

I heard somewhere that the one piece steel can't handle 125+?

Found it, it's in the technical database for 1999 cars - "warning that excessive speeds (excess of 125 mph) can cause the tail shaft extension seal to vibrate out and allow all of the transmission fluid to leak out"

I don't plan on exceeding 125mph, but I have sprinted upwards of 100mph a couple times, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

i went over 125 on my two piece, and im pretty sure some ls1's have the steel drive shaft, and i never noticed any problems

LS1's have the steel? I thought that they all came with the aluminum?
I know the LT1's had a steel driveshaft, unsure whether it was one- or two-piece, as my roommate last year had a 95 Formula.

Just make sure you've got the tools and the place to do the deed. I wish I had a shop of my own my car would have been worked through its mechanicals right now.:)

Ohh, if I had the money for a nice shop... I'd have a Corvette too. lol.

So far I've been able to get by with my cheapo tool set for most stuff, and I've used my dads tools (and his knowledge) for some of our more ambitious projects.

as far as tools go, all i gotta say is.. HARBOR FREIGHT!! seriously, the quality isnt the best but the prices are insane..and they have good return/warranty policies

Like the title says -

Those of you with modified cars, and this includes anything and everything, did you do the work yourself?

I have a 2000 Firebird, and I've been slowly adding and tinkering, but I've been hesitant to delve into some of the more complex things such as a turbo build, internals, heck, even swapping my driveshaft for an aluminum one.

I'm fairly knowledgeable with a wrench, and at the very least I know I can do it with a little direction, but this car is my baby, and I'd be devastated if I hurt my baby.

Just looking for feedback from people who've done their own modifications, or if I should just pony up the extra cash for every mod I want.

Also, as a last note - I would most definitely want to try to do AS MUCH of my own work as possible... I like knowing I built the car up myself. Hence my curiosity!

When I first bought my car, I was decent with tools, but didnt exactly have an understanding of the car itself...I couldnt put the CAI on myself, I needed help.

I sat here and did a lot of reading, got some step by step info for work I wanted to do...researched tons of parts and how they work with one another.

ended up doing my cam swap with a buddy, and a ton of other work myself...learned a ton from this site...fast forward to now, and I am actually designing custom parts for the car ...we'll see how it all pans out soon enough

in the end, I learned that the car is pretty much just nuts and bolts...pretty straight forward once you break her down once or twice...I can pretty much visualize what I need to do to get to different parts of the engine, and different bolts in my mind...unfortunatly, when I do it in my mind, Im done so much faster then when I actually do it

Turbo build here. Never touched a turbo system previously. Got it done just fine. Took almost 2 seconds off my quarter mile time with a very moderate tune. Tuned myself too. I've never taken my car in anywhere. All the info you need to do everything is right here. Or a haynes manual for little extra's like torque specs.
