Hey. I had a run in with a rock on the highway and now I need a new oil pan. I was wondering if there was any other way of swapping the oil pan besides lifting the engine. I do most of my work in a parking lot and I don't really have access to a cherry picker to lift up the engine. I read that dropping the cross member might work, but I was wondering if anybody had done it this way.

i have done it both ways with a 3.8 and both being manuals but it was on a lift. if you have an auto, expect it to be harder cause the flag time if i remember correctly was almost an entire hour longer. if i was doing it in a parking lot, i would definatly lift the engine. besides, all you need to do is lift the engine tranny assembly with a jack stand. good luck buddy cause its going to take atleast the better part of the day doing it on the ground.

So, I should be able to use a jack and a block of wood to lift up the engine if I place the block and jack between the tranny and the oil pan right? I just need a few inches so I'm sure nothing needs to unplugged or removed besides the engine mounts right?

Im going to tell you the nicest way i can.... you cant do it your self in a parking lot unless your superman...take it to a shop. You have to remove transsmission, starter, unbolt the engine and raise it up a few inchs. Its no fun.http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2245261 Green 1997, 105k, all stock except for Z28 front springs, Air shocks in the rear, home made coolant recovery tank, home made battery hold down.

drop the y-pipe down, you do not have to unhook the tranny, thats just adding a crap load of trouble, unbolt and remove the starter, unbolt the engine from the mounts, unbolt the tranny from its mount( not the engine ;) ) and lift. read the guides and get a manual. it can be done, some people are just dont have the brains and balls to do it

If you are a car enthuasist on a budget, you will think of a way to do stuff without the use of expensive equipment.\'97 Firebird 3.8 ... 1/4 mile = 12.50 (minutes)

[/qb]
Have you even ever replaced one? brains and balls have everything to do with it obviously because you dont have the brains to know what is required or the balls to try it yourself. also, dont try to insult me with my profession [/QB]
Yes i have replaced mine, did it with me mechanic. Took a car lift, transmission jack, and removing my old rusted one exhaust, raising engine and about 5 hours. Its not something your going to want to do laying on your back unable to move in your drive way. OH AND MISTER BIG SHOT GM TECH, I WAS NOT TRYING TO INSULT YOU! YOU INSULTED ME SAYING I HAD NO BRAIN OR BALLS!http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2245261 Green 1997, 105k, all stock except for Z28 front springs, Air shocks in the rear, home made coolant recovery tank, home made battery hold down.
