I know the Dexcool eats away at the intake mani gaskets, because i just had to replace them, but does it affect the head gaskets at all? I thought I read on here somewhere before that it's pretty hard to blow out the head gaskets on the 3.8, is that true? Searching didn't seem to come up with too many people that it had happened to...

dexcool does NOT do any harm to an engine unless you dont take care of the cooling system properly.

it wont do any damage as long as you make sure there is no air in the system, and only use distilled water.

anyways, i would recommend using something like prestone extended life 50/50

        Agreed. Although I don't think it'll destroy any gaskets, unless it's used/mixed improperly...and that's still unlikely.

I wouldn't use that crap in anything other than my enemies car(s), and that's only when I'm feeling really mean!

I always took care of my coolant system/levels and such and that S**T still turned to mud in my system. Got rid of it a long time ago and replaced with Prestone 50/50 never had a problem since.

Dexcool is the best stuff in the world. Been using it since 2000 and keeping it changed every 3 years. Awesome stuff. What was the question?

Mt car is 7 years old and 87000 miles on it, and the Dex Cool is perfectly fine.

I havent had a problem with my dexcool and head gaskets...headgaskets on my car are original, and dexcool is still being used...I got 232,000km which is around 145,000 miles if my math is correct...

                      Re: Dexcool/Head Gaskets

They probably either added sealant stuff, poured green coolant in with the DexCool, or used hard water. You're always supposed to use distilled water in cooling systems, whether it's DexCool or green coolant.

Likely DC but could be rust (from not using distilled water) or even oil (not likely). Id do a really thourough system flush, then just put in the green stuff. Check it often to see if the mud comes back. Youll still have that murky color for quite some time, just as long as it isnt muddy and you should be OK..

And then maybe if you drain the radiator at each oil change and fill with fresh coolant, eventually the murkiness will go away.

I just started using distilled water about 85% , 2 bottles RP ICE and the rest green coolant, runs pretty cool. I live in AZ so it works better for me , our winters don't get cold enough to freeze water luckly. But to get the Dexcool out of my wifes grand am I just flushed it a few times and cleaned out the res. real good since it had chunks in it and used safe for all cars coolant and it worked great, her car ran cooler and no more dexcool was in it.
