    Re: motor oil

I have been running Royal Purple 20W50 for about 1.5 years and my cars has been running great. Since the 20W50 is thicker it is great for high heat weather, to help protect the bearings and other componets. I use to run regular 10W30 for about 140,000 miles. With my engine rebuilt at 122,000 miles and I have 167,000 on it now so 45,000 miles the engine is still breaking in.LOL Using RP for 27,000 miles has been great for the engine so far. I started with RP 10W30 then went to 20W50 after about 1-2 oil changes with 10W30.

      Re: motor oil

I'm rolling up on 100,000 (95,600 last I checked) and I recently started running Pennzoil 10W30, full synthetic... Had it in for a couple oil changes now, and was running regular Pennzoil 10W30 for the change before that...

I've gotta say, I love it. I haven't run it in the winter yet, but I don't foresee any problems, not to mention I won't be driving my car as much this year... Picked up a beater.

So it won't hurt to go a lil thicker like a 10w40

I have always used Mobil 1 but now use Pennzoil Synthetic if the Mobil One isn't available at the local Walmart. I will never use anything but synthetic. Mobil One got may last car to 293,000 miles before I traded it for the Bird. The engine still ran like new. The rest of the car was rusting and falling apart though. When I did the head gasket at 250K the inside of the engine was sparkling clean. Synthetic is awesome stuff and worth the price IMO.

Your in Texas , so I would imagine it still stays hot there in summers and the temp won't go below 20 degrees in winter so you should be fine even with 20/50, but if you like 10W40 you'll have no problems, just more protection in the summers heat.

Y'know... I'm not sure lubrication is a point where I'd skimp.

Ditto. I take it one more step. Whatever is cheapest but still has the API seal on it. I use the store brand oil (usually Supertec or Oreilly, but i hear quakerstate is the same) with an oversized generic filter (SuperTech, Texaco, Wix or STP, all pretty much the same construciton from what I've seen.

Now if you are really beating the **** out of the car, keep using the synthetic and a high quality filter. Synthetic won't be as likely to break down under the extreeme heat and the more expensive filters (K&N) have stronger, thicker walls and have a better bypass system.

                        Anyone use generic synthetic?

my old man runs mobil one fully senthetic in his truck and has 289k on the odometer. he changes it every six months regardless of milage (roughly 12-15k a year) and he still drives it to work everyday. Up until last year it pulled the boat every summer too. its a 1994 c1500 with the 4.3 v6 and a 5 speed behind it. he gets about 20 mpg.
