  • Drain coolant?

when i bought my car i guess they just filled it with water. My car never over heats and usually runs around 130*. But my heater sucks, and im guessing its because there is no coolant, is there a way to drain some of it so i can add coolant without having to flush it all?

    Re: Drain coolant?

first thing to check is your heater core, maybe just flush it out. unplug both the lines right underneath the alt. and put a garden hose in one of them till the water runs clear. hook them back up and see if it makes a difference.

if you want to drain some of the radiator there is a petcock on the bottom passenger side of the radiator. what you can do is drain it into an empty coolant jug, and when its filled up, replace with the same amount of coolant.

the two hoses that connect right under the alt, you wanna turn the garden hose on and flush out the core with water. probably be best if you do it in the same direction as normal flow, its labeled on where the hoses connect.

Even if all you had was water in your cooling system you would still get heat. The Glycol in coolant is an anti corrosive/anti freeze/water pump lubricant agent. You either have a blocked or partially blocked heater core. Also 130* is pretty low. I have a 160* stat in my car and the heat sucked with that so i can imagine that the 130* is not helping your cause. Stock operating temp is around 200 or so.

Just because your fans turn on at 100* does not mean that it will automaticly bring your temp down that low. Your coolant is only going to get as cool as the thermostat will allow before it closes blocking off flow. If your coolant is only getting to 130* you either have the wrong thermostat installed or the one you do have has failed in the open position. What temp stat do you have in there now? Is it drilled?

is there a reason why you tuned your car to do this?

most newer engines with emissions equipment actually work better the hotter they are under 250F.. unless you are talking about celsius or something..

i had the same problem and it was because my thermostat got stuck open. i replaced it with a 180 its a little less then stock but still has great heat. good luck
