  • Gas pedal stuck

This happened to me today...I go to push the gas pedal down and it gets stuck..it won't go down more then 10-15%...when I looked at the throttle cables, it looks like the downshift cable is loose...I push on it, and it comes back, but it seems very loose...so loose infact, that it actually slipped off of the roating thing (thing that opens the throttle body) and thats why it was stuck...I moved the cable back to where it is supposed to be, but it still seems loose...the pedal isnt stuck anymore, BUT, the car shifts at 5500 rpm now...it should be shifting at 6000

Any ideas as to what might cause this cable to become so loose and cause this?

    Re: Gas pedal stuck

mechanic seems to think that the downshift cable is sticking...thinks its either the cable sticking, or possibly the valve body that the cable hooks up to in the transmission...

Anyone know how I can replace this cable?

New question...we have 2 cables running to that butterfly piece on our throttle bodies...One of them is the throttle cable...what is the other one for?

The other is cruise control , which mine went out on me before and kept the throttle open when I mashed the gas one time and I had to turn off the engine becuase it was redlining. turned out to be the cruise control cable locked up and kept the throttle cable open. So I just disconnected the cable from the throttle body and it was fine after that, and ordered a new cable for the cruise control.

what happens if I unhook it? anything bad other then not having cruise control? Where does this cable lead? I want to remove the whole thing for now until I can get a new one in there...I dont want it to dangle/catch/or snag anything else...

If you unhook the cruise control cable nothing will happen except no cruise control. The cable leads to the front drivers side under the power steering resisvor, at least on my 96' it does.

I know when I replaced my cable GM had contracted the production of it to a company and the parts dept. just gave me a # to call to order it. To change it out was a B!tch, had to open the whole thing up and remove all these scews that the line goes into, I later just ditch the whole thing about 2 years ago. Its right by the drivers side sway bar bushing now that I remember correctly, and the cable seems like it goes through the whole drivers side. LOL

is it possible to just buy a whole unit with the cable attached? so all I have to do is bolt the unit in and run the wire?

I would make sure thats your problem first by disconnecting it from the TB first, its not going to mess up anything. But yes if someone is selling their or a salvage yard you could get the whole unit and put it in. I wish I didn't throw away mine now it was in working order.

Well I seen it come out of that groove area and I couldn't really open the throttle, even from the tb itself...I put the wire back in that grove behind that butterfly valve there and it worked again like a beauty...I'll just unhook it for now...I gotta have cruise control though...long trips are a b*tch without it ...

                        Re: Gas pedal stuck

ok...so good thing I didnt cut that cable like I intended on doing...it appears that the cruise control cable is OK, but the THROTTLE cable is actually the one that is bad...it doesn't seem to retract back nicely...like if you pull the butterfly by hand, the throttle cable just stays in one spot and slips itself off, and you have to manually put it back on...

                        So, new 2 questions

                        1) is there a way to adjust the cable maybe?
                        2) how can I install a new throttle cable, and what will I need?

                              Re: Gas pedal stuck

I was having trouble with the gas pedal sticking because of the throttle body, I was able to fix it by adjusting the two clearance screw on the side that prevents the assembly that controls the butterfly valve from slamming back into the tb.
