  • In-line fuel pump/delete in tank pump

    Hey guys,

I have a 96 camaro. Recently the fuel pump would not come on. After checking relays/fuses I figured it was the fuel pump and took the pump out through an access door. What I found was that the wiring in the tank for the pump was melted and burned. Turns out the pump is still good. I am considering deleting the in-tank pump and using an in-line pump because I'm scared of blowing myself up now. Any reason I can't modify the stock sending unit by extending the fuel and vent lines?

Chipmunks. I don't care if it was in the fuel tank, they'll get there. Bastards eff'd my alternator and almost my abs system.

To the OP, yeah I believe there are some guys around here that run an in-line. So if your question was if it's possible, yeah I believe so.

Thanks guys. It seems like it should work and I'm using a 255lph external pump which should work nicely as I have quite a few mods and going to a supercharger soon.

As to why... I'm guessing my mechanic pulled on the fuel pump power wire when he replaced the pump a year ago. When I took it apart only one strand of copper wire was in the connector and the rest were pulled out. Running the same current through a much smaller wire generates heat. I'm guessing its that since no fuse was blown.

That is a really scary thought. I'm glad you found it. And it's awesome to hear about plans for the supercharger too.
