  • massive power steering leak

I have a massive power steering leak i cant figure out if its leaking from the reservoir the hoses or the pump itsself. I went to autozone to check the price on them, they only stock the pump without reservoir, so i guess ill have to go to a dealer. Does anyone know of a similar problem or a way to test the hoses or reservoir or the pump for that matter, thank you very much

If you have a massive leak, it is most likey a bad hose. Wipe everything clean and start the car, you will see where your problem is.

man I had a massive leak once, a hole bottle in like 5 mins. of driving and it ended up being a metal tube on the rack and pinion that was rubbing something and put a pin size hole in it and the pressure in the tube shot the fluid out and all over the place.

I had a leak in my high pressure hose... a lot of volume thru a very small hole...couldn't see the hole until I had the car on a lift with the engine running

To replace the presure hose do you have to remove the power steering pulley?

last night i repaired it, just like you sayed once i got under it i wiped every thing down and found the leak, there was i pin hole leak in the high pressure hose, i rented a puller but didnt use it. i just removed the plastic cover from the steering shaft and squeezed in there, the bottom was 18mm, the top was 16mm. make sure you lube and put the o-rings on the new one. it feels like i have air in there or the steering is less responsive, does anyone know why. maybe i screweed the pump or something else up. thx

I had my whole PS pump crack a couple of days ago, it leaked like crazy, there was so much smoke from the burn off it looked like my car was on fire. I went to the mechanic, it cost $200 to repair which wasnt that bad but im smelling the fumes and its still smoking 3 days later from the 2 bottles of PS fluid I put in it that pretty much went right thru it.

You can check and make sure the o-rings seated properly. If there was air in the system, it would eventually work its way out I would think if everything was put back correctly. ( By the way, I work at Honeywell Engines & Systems next to the airport, in the Gear manufacturing center as a maintenance mechanic.)

That's cool. If you ever get some spare time, stop by and say hi. I can be found upstairs in the 103 building on the runway side of the building, first door on the right.

When they did mine, they had to "bleed" the air out. I am sure the air does not help a hydrolic system much. Not sure how to blled it.

It would be best of you raise and support the front end of the car so the PS pump doesn't have to work against the weight of the car pushing on the floor.
