  • anybody know what rear end gears are standard on a 2001 5 speed?

When I bought my 2001 V6 5 speed, it already had 4:11 rear end gears in it. The speedometer hadn't been corrected. It would cost $150 to have that done. So I thought about it a while and decided I'd rather put that money into putting the original gear ratio back in. Anybody know what ratio that would be?

It would be open 3.23's. With no LSD. But I would want the LSD in there so just find 3.23 gears, unless it was ordered with lower gears from the factory, it should say what gears in your codes what was the original gears.

he probably has a series 3 carrier with those gears and a posi...do they make 3.23's for a series 3 carrier?

2ndly...it will cost you more to have another set of gears installed then it would to correct the issue...where abouts do you live, maybe try and find someone in the area with HP tuners that can do it for the cost of the credits which would be 100$...or less if they have all 2001 cars unlocked...much easier fix then swapping gears...

if you dont know how to install the gears yourself, it will be cheaper to just get the speedo calibrated

Yeah I understand it will be cheaper. And a couple of months ago I thought I had someone lined up to do it that had HP tuners, but he never followed thru. So the more time I had to think about it, I think I'd rather have the original gears instead of the speedo fixed.

Do both rear tires spin or is it just 1?

You need to check the RPO code to see what the car originally came with.

The stock axle in an 01 manual was 3.23:1. Cars with Y99 got a limited slip. GM chose that rater tall ratio because of the T5's low first gear, the engine's wide torque band, and needing to get good fuel economy with only five gears.

Look for a Hypertech Power Programmer on Craig's list or eBay. You can use that to change the speedometer calibration for the 4.10 axle.

I sold one on Craig's List for 60 bucks a couple of weeks ago so they're out there for cheap.

do know that a hypertech can correct for bigger wheels or different axle ratio, and are cheap and accessible, but other than that they are pointless.

I would love if my car had 4.11's, mine came factory with 3.42 and lsd though, so i have the best of both worlds i guess. I, for one, think you would be crazy to go back to original gears. But do check the RPO codes on the door for your axle code. All RPO codes can be found here. the ones you want to look for is a GU- then a number, that will tell you the specific axle ratio your car was factory equipped with. also look for the RPO code G80 which is the code for limited slip differential.

I did buy a Hypertech programmer. What they don't tell you is they only correct up to 3.7 something. That's it. So I ended up selling it. I wish they would tell you that somewhere in their literature. For them to just say "correct rear end ratios", but not say what the limit is, is very misleading. And it is very fast with the 4:11's, I LOVE that part. But first gear is basically useless, you have to start off in second, and it sounds so wound up all the time.

You know...I could be wrong on what ratios the Hypertech will correct. Maybe it's only 3.42 and 3.73. I sold mine so I can't check it to see for sure and I can't find details on Hypertech's web site. The HPP III's manual is there as a .pdf, but it doesn't specify what ratios the unit will correct.

No car originally with 3.23s but now equipped with 4.10s is going to be "very fast" or "faster". In fact, top speed is significantly reduced with the 4.10 axle over the 3.23. What the car will be is quicker, but (and a big "but") it will get quicker, only, if it has the traction to use the lower ratio and if you have to start in second gear, you totally don't have the traction. My guess is with a mod'ed engine (say 230-250 hp) to actually have the car go quicker with 4.10s, you're going to need more rubber on the ground in the rear and a limited slip differential. If you don't have that, any improvement in acceleration time is probably imaginary.
