  • Engine Oil Cooler

In your opinion, does it make sense to install an oil cooler on a high mileage car?

    Thanks,

    Dmitriy

Mileage is irrelevant. And oil cooler is one of the best things you can do for the engine period. If you start out doing so on a new motor, it just protects it all that much more and keeps it lasting longer, but an oil cooler will certainly add to or rather preserve life in older engines as well.

Oil cooler is same thing as tranny cooler - autozone. A nice one is 30 and 60 bucks.

        It's basically a mini radiator.

As far as I'm concerned, an oil cooler is NOT the same as a tranny cooler. Tranny coolers cannot be used to cool engine oil since they do not flow enough. You can, however, use an engine oil cooler as a tranny cooler.

You can get an oil cooler from summitracing.com. They also sell combination coolers (one unit for engine and transmission), which is what I'm planning to get.

They are fine to use because transmission line pressure is a hell of a lot more than oil pressure.

Most Tranny coolers are marked in finer print {and/or Oil Cooler)

The nice thing about buying a designated engine oil cooler is that you get all the fittings and hardware you need to hook it up, as with a tranny cooler, you'll have to get that stuff separately.

An aftermarket oil cooler isn't exactly something I would spend money on. You'd need the cooler, remote filter kit, oil thermostat, hardware and lines. Total cost would exceed over $400, and the 10 to 20 degree lower oil temperature would hardly have any effect on the longetivity of your motor. You also wouldn't be able to appreciate the benefits unless you were running an aftermarket oil temperature gauge.

For what it's worth, an oil to water cooler (KC4) comes on some 93 and 94 T/As and Camaros, and is often removed. It's a pancake-style filter, which, if becomes clogged, and drop your oil pressure, and you'll start shaving metal.

If you're hell-bent on putting on an oil cooler, hope you have the change to back it up. I personally wouldn't do it, even on my T/A.

You shouldn't ever need an engine oil cooler running a highgrade blend or synthetic engine oil and doing mostly street driving.

If your engine oil temps are reaching 275F+ you need one, and I seriously doubt they are as your water temp is likely well below 240F.

Without a temperature gauge how do you know if he isn't running 275? F-bodies don't have an oil temperature gauge, and goes without saying oil does not run at the same temperature as the water/coolant. That could be 160-180 degrees, while your engine oil is well over the 250 mark. Every car could benefit from an oil cooler, I reccommend one on any car.

400 bucks are you smoking crack???
