  • No codes, Temp gauge not working, fans on, confused

    Hello All,
Great just noticed I didnt spell Camaro right for my forum name....ugh

Anyways the temp gauge in the instrument cluster isnt working anymore. Fans snap on as soon as I start the car and I have no SES lights on the dash going off. I am guessing, after reading other posts, the coolant temp sensor isnt working anymore so I picked up a new one, as a quick test I unplugged the one currently in the engine and plugged in the new one (not installed) and started the engine. Sure enough the fans started up right again, shouldnt the fans have not started? I would figure the new one, even while not installed, would send a signal to the PCM and the fans should shut off. Maybe I didnt run the engine long enough, I only did it for a minute or so. So with all that done do you guys still think the problem is the actual sensor?

    Thanks,
    Eddie

You do have a code. It is the cooolant temp below threshold code. This one does not set a SES light but does kill your gauge and set the fans in the on position. Take the car and have the code erased and go from there. It is possible that your thermostat is not letting the car warm up enough. I had the exact same thing happen to me a few times because i was running a 160 stat without having the trouble code disabled. How old is your thermostat, is it lower than stock?

Thanks for the quick answer! I have a reader but never hooked it up since i didnt see a light. Deleted the code and all is well fans are off and gauge is working again, added a bit of coolant. Didnt think it would be low since I had the coolant flushed just a few months back.

I hope the car is ok, the temp gauge stoped working while on a trip from Boston to NYC glad it was really cold out on the way there and back.

Better start taking better care and pay more attention.

Now to see if I can get my forum name spelt correctly.

      Thanks!
