I have a 1999 firebird with the V6 3800 I in the process of making some mods to get the best performance.

I now that I cooler engine is fester engine but, if the coolant is gone pas to quic from the radiator then it will not cool down and there fore it will be wormer when going beck to the engine.

Let me now what you think about that.

once the thermo reaches a temp, it opens, and doesnt close until the temp goes down.
So therefore, I cant really see liquid "sitting" in the radiator. I'm pretty sure it never "sits",
it always stays circulating, according to www.howstuffworks.com

On the contrary, if you have no thermo, or your thermo stays open like mine, its gonna overheat!

        I'm stumped!!
as always, correct me if i'm wrong

Just a side question...... does anyone know if the temp gauge is driven directly by the sensor or by the computer? If it's driven directly by the sensor, could a better sensor be installed to make the gauge more accurate? My last car (cavalier) had a temp sender for the gauge and a separate one for the computer.

HERES how I do recommend replacing t-stats..

If you want the most power in the summer time, use a 160* t-stat.

BUT in the winter time you will want the 180* t-stat because of the severely colder tempatures outside.

So, some people switch based on the seasons. I for one prefer sticking with one - the 180*...

victimizati0n ------ you asked us for our help yet call us wrong when we tell you what it is. SERIOUSLY, I was NOT jokin when I told you to go look at how a cooling system works. Your water pump is always moving with the motor on. BUT, when the t-stat is closed, the flow is stopped at upper inlet. When the t-stat opens, the flow continues and the coolant temp is lowered as it flows through the radiator and back in. At no time does the t-stat close until the tempature of the coolant drops enough. The only thing the t-stat does is opens when the tempature gets to a specific point and closes when its cool enough. At no time does it dictate whether your coolant is flowing or not, its always flowing (thats the job of the water pump) -- all it does is dictate where your coolant flows @ specific tempatures.

Temp gauge is driven by the computer which is driven by the temp sender.. But temp sender has nothing to do with engine temp. To verify the sender is working properly buy an infared thermometer.
