Since i got my 97 camaro rs about 5 months ago the gauge for the battery would never say it was charging. My car keeps dieing time and time again untill i decided to get a new alternator. I hooked up the alternator and gave my battery a full charge and the gauge still said it was not charging the battery. The car will idle and the gauge is all the way to the left. If i go as far as trying to honk my horn the car will almost stall out because its not getting power.I need ideas on what it may be? I heard somthing about a voltage regulator and think that is the problem but any help would be appreciated.

Re: Car dieing
first we need to check the output of the alt. to make sure its not the guage and also to rule that out. if it doesnt have any voltage (should be producing around 14.6 volts) then that is your problem. If it it producing proper voltage then we need to look elsewhere. I say this because if you bought a new alt, then it should charge. our voltage regulators are internal.
Did you have the old alt. tested before you bought the new one?
Do you have a mulitmeter?? Put the mulitmeter on dc, and check the output by touching black to ground and red to the big wire connected to the alt. should be producing 14.6 volts. If it is not, remove and go have it tested at your local parts store.Last edited by flamingchicken; 01-12-2010, 03:30 PM.Team NoVa

Re: Car dieing
That's funny that you bring this up because I just heard today at work a similar problem. I don't remember the details but there was something that pertained to the gauge itself that was causing a ton of problems. I hope I'm not steering you in the wrong direction, so maybe take this as a suggestion if all other possibilities are eliminated. I'll try to find out something a bit more specific tomorrow.

Re: Car dieing
I didnt have the alt tested but I should of. What I did is put a different battery in my car which was out of a diff car and had PLENTY of juice. When I started my car up the gauge still reads below normal, I took the battery out once i saw that but i am pretty sure it would begin to lose juice. The battery in my car is only about 4 months old. Even when I gave it a full charge (or very close to full) and then put it back in the car starts very fast and has plenty of juice, but after i drive it a little it goes all the way down, headlights go dim etc. I thought this would for sure be the alternator, then someone said voltage regulator. not sure if thats it or not

Re: Car dieing
Voltage regulator is built into the Altenator, like Flaming said check it with a Voltmeter to see if it is charging, check your grounds and all cables to see their all tight and have a clean surface. Make sure the alt wire is going to the batt. and has power. You can also upgrade it to a 4ga. wire if the wire itself is falling apart and has cracks. Check the plug in on the Alt. to see if the 3 wires are intact and not bent and not getting a signal.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake
