My brothers firebird misses when its raining out. Put MSD coils and wires on it and its been doing it ever since. It misses even just idling in park but any dry conditions its fine. Any suggestions??

I forgot its a 96 3.8L and he sprayed everything he could get to with the car running and no problems. So maybe something is getting wet underneath. He soaked the coils and wires and it didnt misfire.

Put the stock coils on and sell the crappy MSD coils. Stock coils are actually better in performance than the MSD or other aftermarket coils.

I have never had any problems out of MSD coils, but Accel coils seem to be difficult sometimes. Make sure that the rubber grommets between the coils and ignition control module are in place and not cracked.

I have the same problem, except it manifests sometimes when it's not wet outside. Running the stock coils and some new wires.

Check to make sure water isn't somehow getting onto one of the coil packs. We had a good downpour one night a couple months ago that dumped about 5" of water and my car began misfiring at startup after it would rain. Turns out water was leaking from the plastic cowl and dripping right at the base of the 2/5 coil pack. Replaced the bad coil pack and sealed up the plastic cowl and it's been doing fine since.

The placement of the coil packs on the 3.8L is not very good. I remember years ago that people were creating covers that would not allow the moisture to get to the coil packs. They were pieces of sheet aluminum that just deflected the water. Heat soak was another big issue on those coils.

                    Re: misfires in rain

I had similar problems a year or so ago in heavy rain. Since then I replaced all my coil packs with new ones from Autozone and have not had a problem since. I assumed that water was affecting my original coil packs, then again they were pretty old.
