Having a little problem with the engine temp. The needle will get to about 225 and then go down to 170 again. After driving at a constant speed the temp will shoot up again to about 225 and then you can hear the fan come on and the temp drops to normal again. What the hell could this be due to?
I plan on checking the coolant tomorrow and if I need to flush the radiator. I dont think it would be a thermostat problem but does anyone have any ideas?

If you have a stock thermo that isnt too far from right. First of course check all the fluids, and make sure they are right. Then I would just do the cheap thing and replace the thermo. ;) good luck.
My car is doing the same thing. After bearly driving, it would begin to heat up to about 225 and can hear the fan come on, especially when at a light. Then it would drop significantly in a heartbeat when I begin to drive at a constant speed. I parked it when the gauge went in the red yesterday.
