Well last week I finished doing the lower intake gaskets and the car ran great for a few days. Then it sounded like a stick lifter or something no power and misfiring. I originally thought some debris got in the somewhere so I changed the oil and no difference. The Service vehicle light came on so I decided to plug in the computer to see if there where any codes, none. With it plugged in still I started it up and everything was perfect again quiet. So I backed it out the garage and parked it. This morning went to start it and same thing again. Something electrical I guess, a sensor, coil packs, any ideas? I've never seen anything so unusual.

Re: Weird knock and miss problem
did the SES light come on solid, or flashing?
if it was flashing it means there was a misfire, if it was on solid its most likely a sensor
what year is your car?
if it was making a ticking noise and running really rough (like the engine has a huge cam in it) it probably is a lifter with dirt in it, i would try to run the car and let it warm up to see if the noise and roughness goes away, then let it cool and see if it comes back, it really sounds like something is stuck in the lifter though
i would try and find out if its the lifter by doing what i said, and giving it some time to see if it works its way out, it usually will after about a week, but dont try driving it until it stops running rough, and dont use any type of oil cleaner like seafoam unless you want to clog more lifters (if you have never used it in the oil in the passed)

Re: Weird knock and miss problem
The SES light never came on, The Service vehicle light did once, I thought it was a dirty lifter but I really think it's gotta be a sensor screwing something up, it seems like the timing is off or something. the car has a weird shake and no power. But out of nowhere it stopped and ran like a brand new car last night, then came back again. Thanks and open to any suggestions. Oh it's a 99 btw.

so you're saying that the engine temp really has nothing to do with the problem?
there are a ton of things that can cause your problem, the more common ones are a sticking lifter, bad TPS, bad IAC, clogged cat
if i were you i would wait until the problem happens again, and try unplugging the sensors to see if the car stalls or stays the same
it could also be the EGR since you said it was ticking.

Re: Weird knock and miss problem
Actually the problem went away last night and seems to be here to stay today, it's undrivable the way it is. I agree it could be a lot of different things. I replaced the cat last year so I don't think that it. I may have to take the iac out and the coils and have them checked at autozone or something. Is it possible to unplug the tps and start it and see if it makes any difference?Last edited by aawil; 02-27-2010, 03:21 PM.

Re: Weird knock and miss problem
So did you ever solve the problem?
I'm having the exact same issue, also just noticed some coolant leaking around the water pump on mine.
Issue went away for a day then came back, I limped it home as it was almost drivable below 2000 rpm's. Every time I got above 2000 car was misfiring and knocking badly, below it was lacking power but ran. I'm seeing a camshaft position sensor-A performance code pending, and another CPS sensor performance warning as well. It seems like the RPM reading is off as it jitters erratically above 2000 rpm and seems like it's inaccurate.
EGR purge valve code is also tripped, but that's on purpose.
I have an o2 sim, so I'm gonna check that today, maybe it's just frying everything...

Re: Weird knock and miss problem
Hmmm, I'm getting codes; P0300 (random multi misfire), P1361 (Intermittent Interruption In TDC1 Sensor Circuit), P1362 (No Signal In TDC1 Sensor Circuit) and, P0704 (Clutch Switch Input Circuit Malfunction) but I'm no help... Sorry to cheer up your thread, I have no idea what the solution to the initial problem is but hey, if anyone can explain any of my codes in English it would be nice (ok I get P0300)... What is a clutch switch input circuit? how do I replace it? Totally lost on the TDC1 thingy too...
