  • A4 shifter button wont depress

As the title says, my shifter button doesn't want to work all the time. Only when it's in park and apparently has sat for awhile. Moving the shifter after the button finally depresses is absolutely fine. It's just that my button doesn't like to press down all the time. It's not from the mechanism below the shifter to tell if I'm pressing the brake pedal or not since I've disconnected that since I wasn't sure what it was and still had problems. I've since reconnected it. Awhile ago I traced a line that runs up under the dash but didn't dig any further since i didn't want to take apart my dash.

It's so weird because after I work it some it acts completely normal. Otherwise it's just like a solid piece of plastic sticking out of my shifter.

    Any ideas?

Check the solenoid at the bottom to see if it is moving , I disconnected mine I think so I didn't have to wire it up since I did a A4 swap in it. Also make sure the handle is down all the way on the stick.

Yeah I think that solenoid your talking about is the same "mechanism" I was talking about. lol, Yeah the handle is down all the way. Is there anything else that has any control over the button?

any chance you dropped something in between the button and the groove that it goes down? I don't know like food or something?

No, not that I know of since it is all manual parts and not electronic, look into the solenoid thing and just disconnect it. The shifter will stay in park with out pushing the button but when driving it won't lock into place you can move it without pressing the button in.

Yeah that's what it did. You could move the shifter without pushing the button. There was a lil electric hook up to it. Ya know what, I think I have a picture of it..

lol see! It has electrical connectors! I actually want it working as it should. Maybe something inside it is shot. I don't want my gf's purse bumping it or anything if I have to hit the brakes and then my car goes into reverse or park. That would be bad.

Check the connectors , the solenoid itself might be bad also.

I'm not entirely convinced that's the exact problem but I'll look into this weekend.

Maybe try taking off the handle from the stick and taking a look inside... the one I have is the T-handle style and it sounds like yours is the top-button style so I'm not sure if they're similar, but I looked in mine and I could see how the plastic could possibly crack/break and cause your problems...

if that is the problem, you could look into switching to the "button-less" mod or whatever they're calling it...
Rebuilding the engine... Building a custom front end... T-top conversion... Custom rear hatch..
                      Custom interior...
