  • Mechanic suggested using 92 octane....

I've been having a (what seems to be) ignition knock problem when my cars at operating temp. The problem occurs during anywhere from 1/2 to almost full throttle. Dosent really hesitate, but it is an audible "ping". The guy i talked to suggested that since gas is not as "good as it used to be" that i should use 92 octane in my car. I know manu specs say 88 and i told him this but he dissagreed with the specs. Im going to try it out on my next tank of gas and see what happens. Along with a new 160 degree stat and manual fan switch, i hope this alleviates the problem. Any opinions or comments are welcome. Thanks....

It might fix the ping, but it doesn't fix the problem.

Where do you get gas? Nearest gas station or the cheapest one? That might be the problem, some gas stations do not give the best gas.

Do a deep cleaning on the engine and rid it of some carbon. Run plenty of fuel injector in the next 2 tankfuls and spray some gumout down the intake, try the seafoam maybe?

Carbon buildup will cause it to ping, and thats likely your problem.

Do knock sensors go bad??? It seems unheard of, but they are responsible for retarding timing when there is knock. I'd try to record the KR first...as well as a good cleaning, mine is about to get it. Do knock sensors go bad, I've never heard of it really.

I did seafoam about 1500 miles ago so maybe ill try it again. I wish i could record my KR, but i have no access to autotap. Since it only does it when it reaches about 205-220, im thinking that the lower temp tstat and fan switch will help. I also asked the guy about my knock sensor being bad and he said that it would most likely throw a code, but not always. I guess when i get my oil changed again ill get my injectors cleaned too.
