  • Car Sputters/Engine Noise

I have a 99 Camaro 3800, 5 speed, that had a somewhat upper engine rebuild in Aug. '09. New Comp Cams Camshaft 76-800-9 (110.0 Lobe Separation), Comp Cams Valve Springs, Comp Cams Lifters (OE style). Only Royal Purple and Shell middle grade gas has been run in it since rebuild. I often run Lucas fuel injector cleaner every couple fill ups. Around 12,000 well taken care of miles have been put on it since.

Lately, with daily driving, it's has had an occasional sputter here and there. I noticed it when it had been raining or is raining. I changed out the air filter with K&N, which came with a new gasket for it. It seemed to of cleared up the sputter in the rain. But more and more often, it still had a sputter or a slightly rough take off, then be fine. But then some days Id be going highway speeds and need to speed up, it acted like it struggled at first, then be on it's way. Yesterday, it did it with almost every take off. I couldnt take off hard if I wanted to. It was sputter and buck at take off, then be alright. I was almost home, driving on my curvy back road I live on, and had to slow down very fast. I put it in second to get around a stalled vehicle. When I did, all it did was sputter and have no power. I coasted the rest of the way home. Once home, I got out to listen to it. First, I noticed a burning smell (reminded me of when a vacuum cleaner's belts burn up), I could hear the sputter in the exhaust. The motor had some noise as well. Sounded like a ticking maybe. My husband came out to look at it. He claimed it sounded fine (I swear he's deaf sometimes!). I had him get in and I tried to back out the driveway. The car had absolutly no power and about died. The ticking got louder and sputter worse. He seems to think it's a lifter gone bad because the rockers and push rods are stock. Or possibly a fuel injector gone bad, since afterall, it had the occasional sputter every so often. There are no engine lights on and gauges are all normal.

Someone told my husband that it could have a clogged Catyletic converter. But mine was replaced with MagnaFlow High-Flow as of 7/08 with resistor sensor overriding O2 sensor. Three years ago the cat clogged. When it did, I was driving it. Only thing it did was not go anywhere. I had to keep downshifting, thinking it just had no power. No engine light was on. Motor and exhaust (being stock at the time) sounded normal.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?? I don't have the money today to fix it, but will shortly... I really dont want to drive it anywhere to get it looked at, it's unsafe and could damage the motor. Will have to be towed. Thank You so much for any info anyone could have!! :-) Give me a call at 859-445-7975. Thanks Again! -Tonya

hm, it could be a lifter, how loud as the tick?

the lifter wont go bad because of stock pushrods and rockers, but they usually get clogged with gunk and oil cant get into them, since they are hydraulic, they wont pump up and you have play in the valvetrain.

the reason why it feels like it as no power is because one of the cylinders isnt firing.

there are so many reasons why it could be doing it though, its hard to give you an exact reason, but usually a clogged lifter wont cause the car to stall, just run pretty rough

how old is the fuel filter/plugs/wires?

the problem could be a clogged cat, but it usually wont make the engine tick

Sounds like it might be misfiring. I had a similar problem several years back and it turned out to be my ignition coil. One of the cylinders was missing and was running on 5 cylinders and it was very weak as well and would sputter and run rough.
I haven't been "into" my car for a few years so my memory is slightly foggy. But I could've sworn there was a sticky here about spark plug wires and the "mysterious misfire".

I would also lean toward a misfire and/or shorting plug wires. Especially since you state that it had that sputter in the rain previously. It wouldn't surprise me that high humidity, even if the wires were not wet, would cause arcing. So then maybe something you did helped it for awhile, until the bad wire degraded further, and now it's really having a problem. Couple that with the ticking noise and the burning rubber smell and the sputtering, and this sounds like a classic ignition system problem. My suggestion would be to change the wires (and plugs while you're in there) and see if that helps. Plugs and wires are relatively cheap and easy to replace yourself, and are the first things to suspect when misfires start happening. So you almost can't go wrong. And even if that's not the problem, you're not out a ton of money, plus they are something that needs to be replaced periodically anyway. Also, check the condition of the plugs when you pull them, and look for ones that are oil soaked, fuel soaked, or have lots of carbon buildup. Then go from there.

Also, Might I add, when rebuild was done, the plugs were changed out with E3 Diamond Fires. Wires are from June '07....But that was only about 19,000 miles ago. Car isnt drove a whole lot until lately when my Cavalier broke down. Fuel filter changed a year ago (12,000 miles ago), along with clutch at same time. It's not the high flow cat, that was replaced only about 17,000 miles ago. Original cat clogged when I was driving it. It ran completly normal, just wouldnt go anywhere. lol But I will have it checked out by an actual mechanic. I no longer have access to tools since I moved to my new house and I'm way too busy to be doing any repairs (I get married in 16 days). But thanks everyone for your help! :-)
