Headlight Issues

Ok my car is driving me nuts (no pun intended) I have a 99 v6. About a month ago i noticed that i had no headlights. (i dont do much night driving) so i took the headlight switch out and popped off the back cover and the internals of the switch were melted. So i got a new one and put it in.....headlights worked, two days ago i hear a relay clicking (overload protection in the switch clicking on and off) and no more headlights, so i disconnected the switch due to it being HOT... so before i burn out another 50 dollar switch, does anyone have any idea's? Nothing has changed in the car to cause these problems.
