  • 1993 Firebird Window Regulator

    I've already searched, and did not find what I was looking for. My driver's side window has a lot of play in it. I pulled the door panel and can see that the rollers that move along the tracks of the regulator are loose and wobbling all over the place. I replaced the window motor a while back, but I cannot find a good write up for replacing the regulator. Does anybody know where to find a good write up? Or can anybody walk me through it real quick?

    It looks like I would need to drill out the rivets holding the regulator to the door, but do the rivets need to be drilled out of the glass as well? Also, I see regulators for sale on Rockauto.com for a decent price, they are also up on ebay all the time. Are these ok replacements, or no good?

    How much play are we talking about? And are you sure the rollers are all still in tact and secured properly? One of more of your rollers may be breaking free of the window's frame which could cause your symptoms which will get worse until it breaks.

      What I found is that the hub or shaft parts of the roller is wobbling around. Seems like it is going to break soon. It is the one that rides up and down the "cross" toward the rear of the door. When it hits the stop block at the top of the cross the shaft bends down because it is so loose and the window does not seal properly. If I guide it up with one hand it closes perfectly.

        I'm not sure I understand what you're saying, but it sounds like what is a common problem. Usually what happens is the rivet point in which the roller attaches to the window's frame becomes weak (usually from closing the door with the window) and the metal begins to tear overtime until it breaks entirely and the window falls in toward the car.

        What I did was take the roller out (this was after it broke entirely) and drilled a hole in the shaft and tapped it with threads. I JB Welded some washers to the windows frame to reinforce the hole that was now there and threaded a grade 8 bolt through it and into the roller's shaft. I actually did it first with a random bolt i found in my garage and it broke after a week or two so be sure to use something very strong.
