• car sort of surges....?

its not much, infact its more irratating than anything. it happens when im crusing around 1500rpm +/- a couple hundred. if i lightly step on the gas pedal the rpms will sort of bounce a couple hundred until I either press harder or let off the pedal.

I'm still fairly new to doing everything myself and was wondering what this proplem could be associated with? electrical? fuel? air?

if it helps the car is a 96 A4 42k miles. bought it about a month ago from a guy who just didnt drive it. (I think it spent most of its time sitting around as it had a mold smell to the interior.) it was hit on the right side towards the rears as best we can tell. but everything else seems fine with the car.

Mine does that too and I have never been able to find what the deal was. It started about the time my cat gave out but since then I have replaced...

Plugs, plug wires, ignition CM, Cat converter, O2 sensor in both manifolds, coil packs, Fuel pressure regulator, fuel injectors, fuel filter, themostat, gasoline octanes and brands, ENTIRE ENGINE...literally. Still does it. Like you said, it's not really a big problem, no SES codes, and its not that noticeable. But if you are crusing that a certain speed, the person driving next to you might think your reving on them.

Not sure what it is, maybe the fuel filter might be slightly clogged? It's prolly due for a change anyways, so change it and put a bottle of techron fuel system cleaner in there and see if anything changes.

thanks for the replies, good to see my thinking was in the right direction. I was gonna go the fuel filter/cleaner route first, then replace plugs/wires.

Is Techron a good cleaner?... I've seen it about but never used it... I've used the "30,000 miles High Milage" cleaner and Lucas... but how's Techron in comparison? and is it just as good out the pump? does lowergrade gas even GET Techron?

It's stronger concentration than the pump. At the pump 91 octane gets the highest concentration of the 3 grades, but only enough to slow down the build up, not rid it. While 87 gets even less so.
Just try it, won't hurt a thing. Except for some reason it quiets my exhaust a lot<shrug>.
