Hey guys Ive been having this sound come from the front inside part of my car near the dashboard for about a year now, its recently gotten a LOT louder. Im just confused on what it could be? Heres a link to the youtube video i made in hopes to get some help/feedback/insight.
Have someone else ride with you so that they can search around for it while it's happening. Maybe it's just a piece of loose trim, or something simple like that. But it's probably not something you'll be able to find on your own.
It sounds similar to a problem I had a while back. My I-pipe came off of the S-pipe and was rattling a LOT because of that plate or whatever you wanna call it where they meet.
Sorry to go off topic, but what kind of radar detector is that? Looks like a Cobra. If it is a Cobra do yourself and those around you a favor and please get a Beltronics, Escort or Valentine based radar detector when you can. I use a Valentine 1 (latest model), but if you want to get something reasonably priced check out the Escort Passport 8500 refurbished with warranty. It's only $150 on ebay directly from Escort! It will kick the crap out of ANY cobra, even the most expensive ones. This goes for anyone running a Cobra. If you're not running a cobra, then my mistake, it's hard to see in the video. I just can't stand them because:
Cobras really annoy everyone with a high end ($300+) model of a Escort/Bell/Valentine radar detector. Cobras are cheaply made and leak RF on radar frequencies, mainly ranges of Ka band. This cause the top of the line radar detectors to alert for false Ka band when they get near a Cobra. You can't imagine how many times I've nearly crapped my pants, because of a 4 bar Ka signal out of NOWHERE. Followed by a flashing "J" (J for Junk) on my V1 indicating it recognized the Ka as a false from a leaking radar detector. Followed by me seeing that the car I'm passing has a cobra hanging from the windshield. I have no idea how the FCC even allows them to sell these considering the interference they cause....
Also except for one of their newest models, most cobras are completely blind to 35.5 frequency Ka band. Even from inches away! Note, 35.5 is the most popular frequency of Ka in the US. I've seen the 35.5 problem demonstrated personally... I was with my buddy in his car and he uses a cobra, told him about how cobras just don't perform many, many, many times. We get stopped and the cobra never goes off. I figured it was laser, even high end detectors miss laser often from short range. Cop comes up and says "hah your detector doesn't even work" sticks his hand-held Ka band radar inside the car and shows us the cobra won't even go off..... from inches away..... My buddy was pretty embarrassed to say the least :).
To give cobra some credit, their marketing department is doing a GREAT job. They consistently outsell all other brands while offering consistently under-performing products. Their radar detectors look very pretty, stainless steel trim on some models, real nice looking designs. Also their CB radio equipment is actually pretty damn decent considering the price.
As everyone else mentioned is sounds like an exhaust rattle too. It seems as if the rattle is consistent with a certain rpm range under load that hits the resonating frequency of whatever is rattling causing it to be predominantly noticeable.
if you have a catalytic converter check the heat shield around it...that sounds like what mine had for a while.
